We use Tidal to DJ. I don't trust using wifi, anywhere. We use tethering from my phone for gigs. So far, we haven't had any major issues. It does get stuck for a few seconds at times but nothing major or noticeably disruptive. It's amazing to be able to save pre-made playlists from Tidal. Just make sure you have a good Data plan and if you have high speed data, make sure you don't go over it before your gigs because the slow data after you use your fast one does not allow for Tethering. Hope this helped.

I've done this in a pinch on my Denon gear. For playlists before or after the gig, it's great. For a song in a pinch, it's also good. I have the highest tier of Tidal, so I've not noticed any sound quality issues, even on big sound systems. For the downsides...beatgrids and BPM aren't always perfect, and I don't think the key and BPM is adequately saved for songs you've streamed before.

For now, I mirror my collection from my computer to the internal drive on my Prime4 (One of the most under-rated Denon features) or on my SD cards. I have a back-pack setup for DJing parties in exotic places like on a mountain top in Slovenia, in a slot canyon in Arizona, or in an ice cave in Oregon), and I just can't rely on an internet connection to bring the music.

I’ve never had a gig before so as far as personal experience I can’t tell, but as someone who’s been to the same club quite few times seeing the same three DJs I could almost guarantee they don’t use streaming, given people request the same songs over and over, there’s no need

Do the streaming services offer uncompressed versions? I'd worry about artifacts at high volume otherwise. 🤔

top songs by genre, the incentive is to play top songs pushed by big labels, not sure if I like this, they all will play the same songs and very little space for new artist discovery

Ethernet is even more reliable! Much much faster when loading music. It’s like 1 second and the song is loaded as if you have the song in your library! All clubs should have a router in the booth!

I have tested Tidal which is my main streaming service and I think its great, would be nice though to know how to save the data to USB so you don't have to wait for the files to load the data if thats possible!

The only issue, at least as things stand as of right now here in italy, would be legal; here, in case of control from the authorities, you have to present a receipt for each an every track you have in your playlist which means streaming services are not an option (at least in italy) as of right now.

The request thing… Hmm if people know about internet the connection, you can’t say sorry i don’t have it with me…
To many times people come with stupid request which don’t fit at all, some have good request which make sence at all.. but that group is quite small

1. "all streaming is only for personal use and not public performance".
2.inferior sound quality
3. beat grid is often out of place

After looking past all these things, I did a mega 6 hour set that I could have never done with my tiny music library. Definitely here to stay and I read they are working on making the quality better

unpopular advice: the problem i have with streaming. You do not know your tracks. When you prepare your gig, you have a certain amount of tracks you can play in one go. then you got your list prepared in your head, and you can think about what kind of transitions to make without searching and scrolling though tracks you don't even know. If you are a DJ that will show off a certain sound and genre i would say stick to your tracklist bought on beatport or else, than you know your tracks by heart and thus you can create a real musical journey that suits you. Keep improving that list by sometimes buying the songs you like most and change up a little.

Wifi down done. I know a club in NYC meatpacking that is like a cave underground so 5g no go

My Denon SC6000s are pretty new and I did not have the time to test out the tidal integration yet. I'm tempted to switch from spotify to tidal for my music so I can use it for my players as well. The only issue I see is that it works over wifi. I think giving a DJ Booth a proper LAN connection would be the future though. Giving the players a network port for internet can't be that hard. Many already have one for sync with the mixer. Maybe that can be used for that via software update... denon pls? :D

All that being said having the feature is definitely very cool for song requests. In the past I mostly had a phone with spotify routed into one of the line inputs of the mixer. Being able to play everything without adding it to the library is just awesome. There are just some song requests that I don't want to even have in my library. It's too big at this point anyway.

I typically use my hot spot as in practice it depends on ho strong the connection is many places I have dj'd the signal can be patchy, its ok if the song downloads in a few seconds, but equally i have situations where it has taken minuites to download and I had to put a back up song on as it took too long, Tidal is the worst for work flow (I cannot comment on Sound cloud as I have not used it) but Tidal does not show BPM/Key info unless you have already used the song previously it is good in a pinch for a random request, but to do a set could be problematic as the BPM range could vary wildly and if you are not experienced in mixing between large bpm differences it could put you off your game, that being said i like streaming and connectivity will improve as the overall infrastructure improves, but this again depends on where you are based and where you likely to be djing.

how long is a set usually for a booked dj on festival?

Trust is definitely an issue. Depending on what type of dj you are. I wouldn't want to risk ruining a Wedding or Corporate event by no 100% guarantees on reliability. Also not owning the tracks is a problem for me as record labels and dj streaming services could make changes to contracts and agreements and then tracks become unavailable. If you as a dj are unable to keep up with dj streaming subscription costs then no access to music. Owned digital music on sticks or cards are not going anywhere. Dj streaming services good for some things but are not going to dominate.
