Paul Lavon Davis was born April 21, 1948 in Meridian, Mississippi. Not much information is available about his childhood. At the age of 18 he joined The Six Soul Survivors and then moved on to The Endless Chain.

By 1969 he had been signed to Bang Records, the same label as Neil Diamond. The following year he released his album "A Little Bit Of Paul Davis" and the first single, a cover of the Jarmels "A Little Bit Of Soap" peaked at #52 on the Hot100.

His second album "Paul Davis" was released in 1972 and yielded two singles, "Come On Honey" did not chart, but "Boogie Woogie Man" entered it at #97 and peaked at #70 for two weeks in January of 1973 spending a total of nine weeks on the survey.

"Ride Em Cowboy" followed in 1974 and found him enjoying his first Top40 hit with the title track peaking at #23 on the Hot100 in January of 1975. That song found its way to Juice Newton who got a Top40 Country hit out of it in 1984.

His fourth album "Southern Tracks & Fantasies" contained the single, "Superstar" (not the Delaney Bramlett song the Carpenters sang) and was a tribute song tht featured the vocal talents of a young Peabo Bryson as "Stevie" in the song.

In 1977 he released his fifth LP, "Singer Of Songs, Teller Of Tales" and provided him with his second biggest hit ever, "I Go Crazy" that peaked at #7 and spent 40 weeks on the chart which was a record at the time, taking eight months to reach its peak. It gathered more weeks than the previous record holder, Johnny Mathis and his version of "Wonderful, Wonderful".

This record remained until Soft Cell "Tainted Love" beat that record in 1982. LeAnn Rimes spent 69 weeks on the chart with "How Do I Live" which held the position until Dua Lipa 's "Levitating" spent 7 weeks on the chart in 2021.

Davis continued his chart streak with the #11 hit "Cool Night" in 1981 and then again with "65 Love Affair" that became his most popular single peaking at #6. "Cool Night" has earned the genre descriptor of being "Yacht Rock" since then.

His last Hot100 listing was a cover, "Love Or Let Me Be Lonely" that peaked at #40. He briefly retired and then when he returned it was on the country charts at #1 with two duets, the first was in 1986 with Marie Osmond "You're Still New To Me" and the second was 1988's collaboration with Tanya Tucker and Paul Overstreet "I Won't Take Less Than Your Love". He wrote a song and gave it to Marie Osmond and Dan Seals, "Meet Me In Montana" and they took that #1 in 1985.

1986 was the year he was shot in the stomach by a mugger who demanded his wallet. He married Pamela Gayle Jay and had a son named Jonathon, who was a special needs child. She retired from the music business to attend to his needs. She passed on March 20, 2017 and Davis followed her on April 22, 2008 after he suffered a fatal heart attack the day after his 60th birthday.

This was me in 1977. I was going through a rough time and so wanted to belong to someone that wanted me for myself and not for what they thought I should be. I finally found that someone that made me become the man I am today and we were together for 40 years until they passed away in 2017. This song brings it all back. My youth, my vulnerability, my loneliness and love.

Paul Davis had some great songs. His lovely soulful voice was so radio friendly and he had a great sense of melody in his arrangements.

What a voice. In that era he stood pretty much on the top tier of male vocalists in my view. I used to batch Davis tunes with those of Michael Johnson. Always provided a enjoyable rich listening session for me.

Love the slow songs. It brings back so many memories. First year of college. A great time in life. I can still see all my new found friends on the co-ed floor. Sometimes we would crowd into someone's room and put this 45 on and just mellow out to the sound. Or someone would start slow dancing. I met my first college boyfriend this way lol. Sweet memory. ❤ 👌🌷

Great love song, given the DiscoCat treatment. No wonder it sounds way better. Paul Davis just got through smiling down from heaven.

One of the best melancholy piano ballads ever with that incredible C Major melody. Nice spin on the original makes the tune even more beautiful.

Yes…… Another song taking me back to when I was a child. By the time 1978 came around I was starting to understand words as well as my liking the sound of music at the age of 3 years old. And this was one of those songs that I can remember hearing a lot back then.
