How to Use Power BI Parameters to Create Dynamic Power BI Reports

There are two kinds of Power BI Parameters.
- Power BI Query Parameters: By changing these you can change the data that is loaded in Power BI Model
- Power BI Report Parameters: By changing these parameters, Users can change what is shown on the Report

Avi, props to you for pointing out that end users cannot modify parameters in the Power BI website. This is frequently overlooked when showing the parameter feature. I would argue that Microsoft made a HUGE mistake when leaving this feature out because there is a massive difference between a filter (slicer) and query criteria. I think MS did this to reduce the need for data to be pulled back and forth between on-premise server and power bi site. Another seriously limiting factor is that, in larger organizations, it is incredibly common to have data segregated into different databases due to company structure/setup of an accounting/billing/ERP database. The need to maintain 1 dashboard and switching up the connected database is extremely common however, the lack of the parameter feature and Power BI's fundamental approach to data make this necessity an almost impossible task to execute. Anyway, thanks again for the video, hopefully MS will fix this. They did add the ability for users to alter the QUERY parameters in the query section of the power bi site but again, that's not something you would want the users to have to manipulate, there needs to be a way to do this directly from the dashboard.

Many videos do not warn us that these parameters do not work on the Service (Powerbi.com) as yet. You gave us a thorough explanation that included possible workarounds. Enjoyed that. Tx!

Thanks.. just spent a day.. trying to figure out why parameters where not working... Finally an answer. My second thought was Power App, updates a control table with from and to dates. and refresh the data using a stored procedure using the user entry of from and to dates. The only thing, this works if its one user.. but not simultaneous users.. thank you for the info

I think that the parameter is the weakest point in Power BI comparing with tableau.
Tableau can handle dimensions/measures/data filtering in a very flexible and dynamic way with parameters especially by end users.
This should be improved to be used by over existing other BI users.

Hi, about the workarounds.. i would love to learn more about the option #2 to have users input their parameter value using some other mechanism..

Here is my scenario, every users have their own access key (string), and I have to pass the access key value into the power bi report’s data source.. and the data source are using the get data from web (api url). So, it would call the api which is include the access key in url.. but i have no idea how to get the access key from end users and pass it into the data source which using api method to get data.. thank you so much

It is very important to have query parameters accessible through power bi reports. Without this i see very limited use of PBI.
So, In direct query end report user can select the period they wish to see data from huge historic data. Actually it is blocker in Enterprise reporting.
