The Galloup's Goober Midge is a wonderful pattern for a variety of reasons. One reason is the sheer prevalence of the midge (or gnat) in and on the water at all times of the year.

This is also a great pattern for those beginning to tie flies. It incorporates several techniques that will pay dividends down the road. Proper dubbing for sure, but also learning to tie in a hair wing and to in and use a hackle are essential skills.

The pattern will represent a gob of midges floating on the water, and with the hair wing, it comes incredibly close to also representing a caddis fly. A very fun fly to tie - I say go for it!
