The 1st stage at burnout doesn't have nearly orbital velocity, and after separation doesn't need to push the heavy second stage around anymore, so it's delta-V capacity increases a lot. At burnout it only has ~1km/s of lateral velocity, so you'll need somewhere ~2km/s on the stage by itself to execute this kind of maneuver (and possibly less, if you tweak the trajectory a bit). At landing, the atmosphere takes care of most of your velocity, leaving around ~100m/s for you to kill propulsively.

Holy hell that design is brilliant! Excellent job!

Yes, but you have to consider that that's the total velocity vector magnitude, the lateral component of which is going to be significantly smaller, plus SpaceX can tweak the trajectory to make it steeper and thus bring the lateral velocity down further at the cost of incurring some gravity drag losses.
Looking at Falcon 9 v1.0 vs v1.1 mass fraction to orbit (3.143% for v1.0; 2.603% for v1.1 despite the more efficient engines) would imply that they've traded some lifting capacity (~2.5 tons).

If you start both Tiny Tim - Living In The Sunlight, Loving in The Moonlight and this video at the same time, its perfect. :D

the real thing is also able of that. Im not sure from orbit but after its stage 1 or 2 seperation the liquid boosters will smoothly land on the ground.
Just searc on youtube for the space x grasshopper 325m test ITS AMAZING what this rocket is capable of

Hoping that you would Create one that is compatible with the later versions haha

yup thats exactly what SpaceX is trying to do. Check out their yt channel, you can see them test the 2 'boosters' for the falcon heavy.. its tit milk cool

Wait a second, I know the thing can land itself, but you're telling me it can completely REVERSE it's orbit to land? DAFUCK

There is error in render model of first stage - engines in 1.1 does not have these corner shields, like v1.0.

1.8 km/ second at stage 1 burnout according to launch narration.

Surely it must use a parachute. I think they just didn't draw that in.
