German troops fighting in Normandy after D-Day used to tell a grim joke: "If you see a blue plane, it is British. If you see a silver plane, it is American. If you don't see _any_ planes, it is the Luftwaffe".

The movie Downfall will forever put unfair pressure on any other actor who portrays Hitler simply because of the near perfect voice, physical appearance, and physical movement being so close to Hitler himself.

“Are you prepared to do this, Rommel?”
<Rommel thinking of green-lighting his assassination> “Ya!”

Superb actor for playing Hitler. His tonality and speech style are completely on point. No doubt he studied the audio of Hitler meeting Mannerheim.

The actor for Hitler even got his movement patterns pretty well down along with his speech mannerisms, pretty good performance.

I think all of us Arm Chair historians can agree upon this: Rommel knew exactly how to stop the Allies in Normandy. Keep them on the beach and fight them with every man, gun, and panzer until they were blown out to sea. He knew first hand just how effective Allied Airpower was and that the Luftwaffe and Kreigsmarine were basically non-existent.

Once the Allies landed and established the beach head it was a wrap. Rommel said this shortly after the landings "If I were the Allied forces right now, I could finish off the war in 14 Days "

Great line: No one negotiates with me anymore.
Absolutely true and since Casablanca Conference a year earlier and official policy.

Hitler would never wear his visor cap inside, especially in a meeting.

This clip summarized the key reasons why Germany lost:

1. Since 1943, especially the Anglo-American Front Berlin can only rely to the Heer since Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine are basically non-existed. Allied air supremacy paralyzed the German's movement, supply routes and industrial bases

2. There were simply not enough reinforcement, not enough men and materials, as pointed out in the film that the Germans can only choose to defend either Cherbourg or Caen. In fact 3 days later Hitler ordered a counter-attack with 4 fresh SS Panzer divisions, but Rommel were forced to commit 3 of them in Operation Epsom as there weren't enough infantry to hold the lines. That was the moment Germany lost Normandy since they lost their last chances to be in offensive.

3. Hitler only believe in himself and often overrule the front commanders, which is why Rundstedt say he can only move his guards from left to right. Hitler failed to stay in reality and authorized a withdrawal only when it's too late

Ulrich Tukur, who plays Rommel, is a superb actor. Check him out in The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen).

So, Hitler decided to go back his childhood dream of being an architect since that little hobby he had as a military strategist wasn't working out too well.

The actor playing Hitler did great. Emulated the legendary Bruno Ganz performance with added attention to historical details that we learned since. The Wehrmacht pointing fingers at the Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe was also a great writing detail. Everyone in the German military would point fingers at the other branches to keep Hitler's approval.

His Austrian German accent was on point. Even hard to understand for some Austrians.

Even if the germans somehow managed to push back the allies into the sea and defeat the invasion the Soviets are still launching operation Bagration few days after the landings that will absolutely destroy german forces in the east the war would probably last longer maybe until 1946 but the result would still be the same

Rundstedt began to think "Oh shit, we're f-ed up".

At the beginning of film you'll see Rundstedt was a bit antagonistic towards Rommel, citing him as "Company commander".

At the end, Rommel was proven right and whole Germany's situation is now total FUBAR.

Only thing is that Idk why he’s wearing his cap indoors, but I guess it was for the dramatic effect to make him seem more “in command” compared to the other generals and commanders. Either that, or the actor’s hair wasn’t convincing enough to be Hitler so they decided to have him keep the cap on.
