What was explained? He figured out a "treatment". That part was obvious. One thing that you missed was why the "free zone" was in Canada. In the book, and original filmed version, the "free zone" was set up far north because it was discovered that zombies, lacking a circulation system, would freeze when sub zero. So you move the survivors far north and that gives you a point to fight back from.
