The Chimu Empire, or Chimu civilization, was a civilization that flourished in ancient Peru before the rise of the Inca Empire, emerging around the early 10th century and lasting until the 15th century when it was conquered by the Incas around 1470. The Chimu civilization was centered along the Peruvian coast, with the Chan Chan archaeological site serving as its capital and flourishing around the early 13th century. The kingdom was founded by King Taycanamo around 900 AD and expanded significantly after integrating the Lambayeque kingdom in the 1370s. The Chimu civilization was also known for its large-scale child sacrifices.

The downfall of the Chimu civilization began with its defeat by the Inca Empire during the war that started in 1462, culminating in its conquest around 1470 by Tupac Inca Yupanqui. The Inca Empire absorbed the Chimu civilization through military conquest, political integration, economic exploitation, and social assimilation, incorporating Chimu culture into their own. Research and excavation of the Chimu civilization continue to this day.
