I got eight years out of my starkey hearing aids and I hardly did anything to them. I never had them cleaned I hardly ever changed the little waxguards. That just shows how amazing the build quality of starkey hearing aids are.

Very helpful! I’ve worn hearing aids for 5 years and I knew about changing wax guards and avoiding keeping hearing aids in the bathroom, but I had no idea about having to clean the microphones or the end of warranty refurbishment!

Dr. Cook, PLEASE HELP! I have asymmetrical hearing loss. After my first visit my audiologist recommended that I can use just one device for my ‘bad’ ear until such time in the future that the second is needed for my current ‘good’ ear. This represents a significant monetary savings. With today’s technology, can I get the hearing benefit I need with only one device? Another hearing vlog professional has recommended a pair regardless because that’s how they work the best. I’m conflicted and have put off making any decision. Do you have a point of view? Thanks, JB in NC.

Thanks for the tips. I have Phonak Audeo M70-R hearing aids that are 3years old. I followed most of your recommendations but have had to send my hearing aids back to Phonak three times (about once per year). The second time they were sent in my audiologist said that unit was replaced because it had a new serial number. The last time they were sent in (at the end of the 3 year contract) they lasted 2 week then had the same old static issue that the audiologist said was most likely a moisture issue. I have a dryer ( the one you showed) and use it about every two months. Considering the price of these devices I have been very disappointed. Hearing aid companies need to apply water proofing methods similar to those used in iPhones if they want to stay competitive with OTC hearing aids.

There will be coments about "I had Acme hearing aids for 10 years and never did nothin, and they were fine" Were they? Just like your hearing loss, the efficenciy of your hearing aids may diminish gradually, and you might not notice. I know 2 hearing aid users who have never changed the wax guards.

I got a pair of 6 months old fancy rechargable phonak, the rechargable battery life is already degrading, from full day to less than 12 hours... I stream a lot as I use them at work, but at some point it will simply not be enough.
We will see, fortunately I have "free" hearing aids as I live in northern Sweden.... Might need new batteries soner than phonak expects.. And by the way, it can be like -20 degrees here, which probably doesnt make battery life better...
