Former Ford CEO speaks on his tenure at the automaker

CNBC's Sara Eisen meets with former Ford CEO Mark Fields in his first interview since being leaving the auto giant.

I liked Fields as CEO of Ford. I was sad to see him go.

I think it was a mistake to fire him so quickly. I think they should have given a few more years to see what he can do. He would not have rushed the Explorer project. And he did pretty well making the Continental.

At the end of the day, this guy needs to sell hair grow product. It almost looks real.

Mark Fields is cool. Hard though to be the fired guy.

He over spent and over focused the company on electric cars that are very expensive to build and don't even sell - look at their track record with EV's and hybrids, failure after failure. Their move to shun his ideas was a good one, jury still out on his replacement. Mach E will be a moderate seller, but probably not at the volumes required for them to make money off it. Revenue will still come from F150's, SUV's and real mustangs.
