Fraction Games for Kids | Lego Education | What is a Quarter | Fractions | What is a fraction | Math
What is a fraction or a quarter? This is part of learning math for kids and we have decided that doing that with some Lego blocks will make the lesson much easier for the kids.
First of all, kids should understand what fraction is or what a quarter is, they should be able to tell how many pieces the quarters are, and they should be doing or learning these things through a game or a thing which they are interested in - in our case it was the Lego which we believe is found in every single house out there.
Kids should be able to put fractions in context, be able to relate it to real-life scenarios, and really get that deep understanding of fractions and know what the quarters are.
Teach your kids more about the quarters through asking them to divide the Lego blocks between the four different characters which they have. This could be in ones, twos, or any number that you want to train your kids with - but we always recommend that you start teaching them more about the quarters or the fractions of the numbers with the ones or the small numbers in general.
At the beginning, we started with teaching Aaron to split the Lego pieces we have so that he could give every single character its share and that's why he knew that a quarter to four means one. The next step was increasing the number to eight so that Aaron could think a little bit before answering the question of how much the quarter of eight would be, which of course will be four.
It is important to talk through the whole thing with the kids, let them think and give them the chance and space to answer your questions in the way they consider the most suitable for them. While you are playing with the kids with numbers, try to ask them how many would these bars be if added together and let them answer you.
After taking the first step in understanding the quarters in general, you could then move on to the next step which is about teaching the kids more about what is one quarter, what is two quarters, etc. but always try to make the lesson more physical than always depending on the mental side because this will make it much more difficult for the child and thus will eventually make the whole lesson a lot harder for them.
We love Lego and we enjoy the different math lessons that kids get to learn through them - parents and teachers have to know that kids should always feel comfortable with because they should be interested in the lesson they are receiving and since they love Lego, they will most probably enjoy what they are doing and what they are learning which will eventually make the whole thing a lot easier for them to learn.
