To explain fractions in real or through a seen object, you could depend on cakes, pizzas, circles, etc. or even tend to create those things all by yourself through using paper plates, colors, and scissors - that's the fraction game for kids which we have been playing in this educational video.

In this video, we are trying to bring the concept of fractions to the kids and even let them understand what half means, what is a quarter, what is eighth (8th), etc. and how they could translate these different mathematical words into a whole.

We started this video through using a paper plate in order to draw a small pizza on it - you could choose a cake or whatever you like, putting in mind that it could be divided in real life as well. Give your child the chance to be the one choosing the colors to draw with and the one doing all the drawing in order to bring out their creative side - you could only offer a helping hand as some kind of enforcing the idea of teamwork.

Once the pizza is drawn on this paper plate, the next step will be about understanding the different fractions. The first question to ask the kids is about halving: what does half mean? Some might not understand what half should really mean, but others will know that it is dividing the pizza between the people sharing it equally - and since it was just me and James then half was dividing the pizza into two pieces equally between us. Kids should understand that half means two.

The next fraction to learn after knowing more about the quarter is the eighth. The eighth is easy to be understood by the kids, it is dividing the whole piece or object into eight parts; in our case, it is dividing the pizza into eight parts.

Along the way of teaching kids more about fractions, talk with them in the mathematical vocabulary, let them know how many eighths would they need to add in order to get a half, how many halves would they need to combine in order to have one full pizza, etc. and keep asking them why did they choose a specific answer and why do they need to add a specific number to get the final answer, etc.

This is an important activity to help the kids think and consider how to divide the things which they have equally. This is also good when it comes to math because they could start saying that if they added two eighths together, they would end up having a quarter and if they added two quarters, they would end up having a half, and so on.

The most important thing is to make sure that what you are going to teach your child and the resources you are going to use are compatible with their age in order not to be taking them further away from the needed.
