As an owner of a 2016 BMW M2 (F87 generation), I'll give my thoughts on the new 2024 BMW G87 M2, and give me impression on whether I'd buy the car.

We'll start by talking about the current generation of the M3 and M4, the G80 & G82. We need to talk about those cars and my thoughts on them before I give my opinion on the new G87 M2. I'll delve into what I think of the looks, and ultimately whether I think the price tag is worth it for the new M2.

As I point out in the video, I have no driven the G87 M2 yet, so all of my opinions are with the asterisk that I have not driven it yet.

Watch the video and find out my thoughts on the topic!

Just a few things to point out:
1 - The F87 M2's $56, 695 launch price you quoted doesn't account for inflation. Adjusted, the F87 M2's price would now be $68, 170, which is about the same as the current M2's price, so BMW have done a decent job keeping the M2's price relatively stable. That being said, now that F87s are starting to depreciate, it definitely is a good time to buy a used one if the new car doesn't suit you.
1a - Relating to the first point, used G8X M3/M4 manuals are now starting to depreciate to the same price as the new M2, and I wonder if from your perspective, is it better to buy one of those if someone insists on a buying a G8x platform, since you get more car for the money. The advantages include:
- More usable rear seats
- iDrive 7 equipped models have more physical buttons and no giant screen (unlike iDrive 8)
- Similar, if not better performance (engine has slightly more power but weighs the same as the G87 M2)
2 - I wouldn't mind a used R8 or V8 Vantage, but with the latter, most Aston Martin owners will tell you they are NOT cheap to maintain, but I guess that's part of the game with exotic cars. As for the R8, that may be a good find, especially with the iconic gated 6spd manual. Even with the infamous R-Tronic, I'm sure someone will start a service to convert them to manuals. This is already being done amongst E46 M3 CSL owners.

Lets discuss your points:
1. Price: $53, 000 in 2015 adjusted for inflation has the buying power in Dec 2023 of $69, 500. The MSRP on a base M2 is $63.2k. Unfortunately, the cost of materials and manufacturing is simply more expensive today.
2. Character: The defining character of the F87 M2 is it's inability to put down traction on the rear due to it's short wheelbase. Fun for drifting around, but ask yourself - do you want 453 horsepower constantly stepping out everytime you get on the throttle? I don't unless I turn start to turn the traction control off. Let me tell you, even in the MDM mode on the G87, it starts to step out. With the adjustable traction control off completely - it will move the rear 90 degrees. There's lots of character. Even with the ZF8 auto (my first car without a manual transmission - BMW manuals are really lacking. I could film a whole video on the transmission choices for this car)
3. Looks - I bought it in black. It looks like a pissed off batmobile. Not much else to say here. You should see it in person.

Overall, you should really drive the car - I think it would totally change your mind. You need to spend 100k+ to get a comparable car with a manufacturer warranty.

It's fugly along with the G8x M cars. This will be the forgotten gen once BMW get their act together on the next gen which will be the final ICE M cars before they move on to only EVs.
