No ones addressing what he said. If it isnt the religion of Arabs why does one have to learn Arabic to practice it?

We say Islam preserves culture, but we change names and dress to Arabic ones. Gives a contradictory impression. Just saying.

White Southern Revert here & my goodness, there isn't one corner of life today that isn't marred by tribalism. Although we cannot create history at a time of our choosing and I myself, acknowledge my own biases from long ago growing up in a racist society, we as Muslims need to understand our Deen goes all the way back to Adam(AS). Allah says we are the best community, all of us molded by the same clay and all face the same Qibla. Culture is important, but those bits of our culture & tribe that do not conform to Islam must go. I enjoy your podcasts, Sheikh. May Allah bless you

I don't know how Umar was brought up as a Muslim but it appears he was searching for blackism in religion instead of Gd and His worship. I get the idea that he needed to see Africa in Islam but he could easily found that by studying Islamic history. Your commentary is much appreciated as always my brother.

1st Black people in the Muslim are still referred to as abeed (slaves or servants)
2nd Tunisia 🇹🇳 president and many North Africans have said that "if Muhammed were black no Arab would be Muslim."
3rd As an African who's traveled around Africa, the non Muslim regions of Africa are by far the most peaceful regions. Why is that?

“Have they not travelled throughout the land so their hearts may reason, and their ears may listen? Indeed, it is not the eyes that are blind, but it is the hearts in the chests that grow blind.”

May Allah guide him

This is great commentary and analysis on Umars statement. Thank you for being objective and discussing the identity issues that we as Foundational Black Americans have.

As an African, I agree with Dr Umar. People confuse Arabism with Islam. I like how the nation of Islam has Africanized the Islamic faith. They are unapologetically African American

I believe Dr. Umar Johnson is right to the environment of the ignorance of Arabic and other immigrants who lead a lot of Black Americans in such a direction of Arab and Pakistani Culture that displays it understanding of Islam as we know Black Americans have its own experiences

Imam Rashad, I understand what you are saying about African American Muslims who lose their identity and take on Arab culture. We used to call them schizo Muslims. When we saw their dilemma, we were very happy and realized the blessing of Imam WD Mohammed (may Allah be pleased with him) among us. His teaching and guidance made us comfortable as American Muslims. Alhamdulillah!

After growing up in Christianity and then practicing Buddhism I stopped embedding myself in a said religion. The main reason is that for the majority of black people we have no religion that has been passed on for thousands of years, written, developed, and spread in other countries by men whose headship looks like us and an unbroken pattern that's not debatable. It's always another culture of men telling us who God is

Islam is a religion from Allah swt revealed upon prophet Mohamed Ppuh. It is a universal message to all humanity. It does not promote the interest of a particular community. Your brother is the Muslim no matter his ethnicity or colour. However, if oppression is being done to anyone, a Muslim has the responsibility to stop it by his_her hand if possible. If not, through his tongue, if not should shun it from his heart....like our prophet said.

But eating together with our hands is part of our culture... I still don't think Dr umar was a practicing Muslim cuz I'm a Muslim from Northern part of Nigeria bread and brought up in southern part of Nigeria and I can tell you in our mosque you will find different types of ethnicity and cultural differences in our mosque, , Yoruba with their style hausa pple with their style and even Senegalese tooo and every one is happy and a shame that Dr umar who proclaim himself as a learned person think this way, , , I swear a 15 year old student in our madrasat will not be so ignorant like this
