I think when she said, “More of us wears away” she meant that living as they did, no longer in a thriving and developing civilization but just surviving in stasis for thousands of years, was making a bunch of their knowledge & memories fade.

Disney threw this and Treasure Planet under the bus to specifically kill their 2D department, they did them so dirty.

Honestly this might be one of Disney's most underrated films.

fun fact: the large fish mr. whitmore has in tanks are coelacanths. an ancient species of fish that were thought to be extinct at the time the movie is set in and only found in fossils. so its a hint that mr. whitmore has spent his life discovering things thought to not exist.

years later we discovered living coelacanths basically unchanged from the fossils from millions of years ago.

The casaulties in this movie are enormous. The Atlanteans at the beginning, large portion of the people on the sub and then the rest with the stormtroopers.

THIS is a movie that deserves a live action remake! Disney keeps trying to make “safe” bets by remaking movies that were box office hits, what about great animated movies that for some reason weren’t financially successful but became huge hits after home release?

Love this movie, Kida is the best Disney Princess there is. Also Milo reminds me so much of Daniel Jackson from Stargate

Re: plot holes - an additional bit of info you may not have focused on very much is another thing that the king said - that he had tried to use the Crystal as a weapon of war and it backfired (literally buried the city), and that's part of the reason why he hid it - not just to save Kida, but to stop anyone from misusing it again. And he said that it's evolved to be capable of thought, and seemed scared of the power it possessed. So he hid it. How exactly that made the whole culture deteriorate so much? That's for real a bit of a plot hole.

At least the king not being able/willing to teach his people to read their language somewhat makes sense, since he's blind and clearly tried to erase the knowledge of the Crystal from their consciousness.

Fun observation: the king can see at the start of the movie. He holds Kida as her mother is pulled into the Crystal, covers her eyes and tells her not to look - but he keeps looking. That's when he got blinded.

The middle bit where you feel the movie skipped over too much - well. That's because they ran out of money. They had enough to do the first half of the movie, and then saved some for the ending - the middle bit of exploring Atlantis sadly had to get rushed/cut.

This one and Treasure Planet are the most underrated Disney 2D animated movies ever. They deserve more recognition and even a Live Action remake.
