How Is Skiff Email Doing So Well?

Ever since Gmail launched back in 2004, it has been the go-to email client for basically everyone other than companies. The easy integration with Google’s other products like YouTube, Drive, and Android made it by far the best choice. But, as the sentiment surrounding Google is starting to shift so is the user base. In fact, a new email client named Skiff has managed to grow to nearly a million users within a single year. Their main pitch is encryption without sacrificing the UI or experience but they also have several other factors going from them as well like free custom domains. Skiff isn’t the first company to try to do this though. ProtonMail launched nearly 10 years ago with a similar premise and though they are doing quite well with over 70 million users, they’re not exactly challenging Gmail. Skiff does has a lot of VC money and quite a bit of momentum so maybe that will tip the scales in their favor but only time will tell. This video explores whether Skiff’s momentum will fade away as they become a niche champion or whether they actually have a shot at becoming a true giant.

CORRECTION:
I mentioned that all of Skiff's code is open source. This is not correct. Only select portions of their codebase is open source like UI and cryptography.

It’s definitely no harm having a competitor to Gmail!

The reason Proton sticks to PGP is simple. It’s the only cross-platform solution for free end-to-end encrypted email. There’s little point in Skiff having a better encryption standard since it’s only used within Skiff. No other emails sent to or from Skiff are end-to-end encrypted, while PGP works with a variety of different services.

Welp, this was the video that convinced me to switch to them... lol

And now I'm switching from them to Proton Mail, because Skiff just announced they're done for in 6 months, whereas Proton Mail specifically insists it'll be resilient & around for the forseeable future.

Another big advantage of skiff by being new is that you can own your desired user name without adding weird number combinations at the end.

Didn't even know Skiff existed. Great video as always.

Hotmail was wildly popular long before Microsoft bought them. They were the default choice for free webmail for quite a long time, which is likely why MS bought them in the first place.

As a Proton Mail user, I welcome this new privacy-focused email service. Might give it a shot at some point if I need another email.

Skiff is E2E secure yes, BUT only when sending emails from Skiff to Skiff. As you might have guessed most of the email conversation you will be doing is going to be outside Skiff, and those are going through standard cross-platform email protocol which is not E2E encrypted (because thats not supported). They can read those emails, but they choose not to.

Privacy is one of those things you don't care about until you get it

yes, we might be numb to it and we might not care too much about it, but I can promise that IT'S STILL valuable.

I moved from Windows to KDE Neon a while ago, and I don't see myself going back.
KDE Neon has all that Windows has, AND you get privacy as well. It feels nice. It's good.

It's not obvious at first, but long term you feel better with privacy than without it.

And that's precisely the point: privacy at the cost of features doesn't sell, but *given the same features, the app with better privacy wins.*

The fact that we're watching a video about a competitor to Google on YouTube feels ironic to me, but what can we do?

I'm still using proton (recently switched), but skiff was so close to being my choice! I just kinda wish their android apps weren't as buggy. And well, proton included some other features that I liked so I ended up choosing it mainly because of that. But hey, it's interesting to see gmail having some competition!

I use it for about 6 months already (and their Pages too😍) and it works amazingly

I tried both them and Proton and skiff had more advantages for me

This is the first I'm hearing of this. Glad to see competition

Literally just made an account with them and already feel at home. Amazing new clean UI and it's opensource. Something you literally never see together. It's either one or the other. It's also a breath of fresh air to be freed from Gmail which I have been using for the past 12 years. Now i'm just waiting for a viable Google Docs, Google Workspace and YouTube competitor. All which I hope Skiff can do under their copyright & branding. Thank you for this informative

I agree, the best way for an email provider to monetize is by making it's own ecosystem of useful apps which use the provider's email account for logging in. That's exactly what Microsoft and Google are doing, and what Yahoo did not do which let to it's fall from being the top email provider, especially since yahoo also has a search engine in it's ecosystem.
