RAM and CPU cache: Where the fuck is Bob!?
Mobo: I don't know! He was here second ago!

Next up, don't unplug your network while downloading.

Here's an interesting fact for people, there's a distribution (actually a few) of Linux that is small enough to fit into RAM. SystemRescue is one, it only needs ~1GiB of RAM recommended if you want it entirely in RAM. And of course Puppy Linux and Damn Small Linux are some others, but they take it to the extreme. So if you are booted into either of those, nothing will happen if you disconnect the boot drive, unless you remove your RAM which is the true boot drive.

Heh, I was as surprised as you when it took a moment for Windows to die without the OS disk. I was expecting a near-instant BSoD without user interaction.

Makes me nostalgic for taking the disc out while playing ps2 games and seeing how long I could still play them

I don’t need a working power supply, my motherboard has capacitors… 😬

Now unplug the drive in the middle of an update

This is actually a really good demonstration

Careful with this, I did have it hooked up to the same power cord as HDDs.

When you unplug the power of a different drive that uses more watts, it can give a current peak that can destroy your SSD. This is how a 1TB SSD went to the grave, and it was even the newest SATA drive I had.

For those thinking you have to NOT try this to not lose data you are wrong.
Backups, backups backups. Then you have my blessing to pull out your ssd

I love how this informes me that ram does these things to keep your files and programs open

This is possible (for non-OS drives) if you go to the storage manager and mark it "offline" first. That is actually very useful. In the old days you unmounted the drive and then flipped the write protect switch on the drive and then flipped off power. Every OS actually has support for this concept.

Wait! You forgot to boot up after.
"Boot drive missing"

happened to me 3 times.
problem: faulty cable, sometimes no connection.

Good old days, when I didn't had a hard drive and start msdos from floppy disk. Then the system stayed in the memory (4mb, with 2 of those dedicated to video) and we changed the floppy to run other programs. 🤣

Does a similar thing on the PS2 as I learned when removing disc while playing a game. The level will be loaded in RAM along with all the assets and physics, but the background soundtrack (if there is one) will stop playing leaving only sound effects. When progressing in the game however, it will freeze until the disc is reinserted iirc.

You know you made a informal video about what happens when you unplug a drive but you also showed a really example of what how important your ram is

While you should never do this on desktop hardware, it's a completely normal way to swap disks or even ram on server grade hardware which is designed to be hot swappable (but costs a lot more of course)

This is the best demonstration of what ram actually does

Dont worry we got the OS installed on the ram
