That tool only works if the lock ring is thick enough I tried it and it just slips off, I had to end up using an internal bottom bracket removal tool it's worth checking

I'm a little curious why there are 2 types of lockring. You have the inner thread that requires the BB tool, as this video shows. You also have the outer thread type that works with a cassette removal tool. Atleast Shimano didn't create a NEW tool, but the lower profile "outer" thread type is lower profile, so less likely to interfere or "catch" on anything.
