The First IT Certification You Should Earn

In this video, Keith Barker covers the first IT certification that a fledgling professional should earn. If you're just starting your career, you might find yourself understandably overwhelmed by how many certifications are available to you. Learn which cert is like the Switzerland of IT.

It's rare that someone who's just starting their IT career knows exactly what they want to do. You might have an inkling that you like routing, or that virtualization sounds cool, but one of the greatest things about IT is just how diverse and broad of a career field it is.

The CompTIA certification is a great place for any IT professional to start for that very reason. First of all, it's vendor-neutral — which means that it applies to IT technologies, not to a certain manufacturer of hardware or developer of software.

It's also extremely broad and covers nearly every topic of IT there is. You'll learn about server, storage, networking, virtualization, and much more. It's a great way to verify your basic set of knowledge, and most every employer understands exactly that.

Should have mentioned a Cert-not just the company lol. For those watching, try out the A+, Net+ and Sec+ certs to start. A+ is foundational, Net+ is the networking basics, Sec+ is how to keep that network secure using various methods and what vulnerabilities you may face with certain protocols. I hope this helps.

Pretty underwhelmed by this video. I was expecting a comprehensive video explaining why a certain certification must be the first to get.
