Many of English Heritage’s religious sites were once home to one of the four major monastic movements – the Benedictines, Cluniacs, Carthusians and Cistercians. What was the purpose of the monks to the church?
Did the monks offer some sort of help or advice? or spiritual protection?
They obvious had to have money build the castles or structures they lived in.

Ora et labora - prayer and work - is a nineteenth century motto, invented by the Wolter brothers who revived Benedictine monasticism in Germany. And monks didn't wear rope girdles, and certainly not white ones. That's a mendicant thing
