As someone in IT who has had to call microsoft support this year to activate an OEM windows XP key, im so glad this exists now. It took over 20 minutes because i could barely understand the guy and he needed to read out a 30 digit code in his thick indian accident. One of the most frustrating things ive done.

Cracked the activation? Like the actual activation code? Because crack existed even when the system was still alive, still supported. But if someone figured out the activation code and how it works, then yeah. I can finally install Windows XP in my virtual machine! :D

ReactOS (FOSS Window$ clone) is aiming to be compatible with Windows Server 2003, so about the same as WinXP.

That's not how open source works. Open source means the code base is available to the public to view, edit, etc.
This basically gives the key to use it, not the ingredients and the blue prints to build it or modify it.

An open source version would be in so much legal trouble that it couldn't fly in countries that respect US copyrights...

Even if MS themselves would chose to ignore it, so many companies have had mutual NDAs with MS, so it's a legal minefield.

Just like when a big chunk of Win2k source code leaked, nobody in the open source community dared to adopt the code... but of course, some developers may have learnt a trick or two by reading win2k sources.

My Chemistry lab has HPLCs (High performance liquid chromatography) that can only run on windows xp, so thats actually useful for some applications on the overall scientific community

This will not lead to an open source version of XP. Besides the fact that Keygens are illegal (because of the DMCA), having an activated Windows version doesn't give you access to the source code. And fun fact: the code for Windows XP has been leaked years ago.
