I also find it interesting that Snow didn't just kill Peeta when they had him. He dressed him in white just like himself and chose to turn all his memories of Katniss sour. Almost like he sees himself in that position and is trying to somehow show Peeta that Katniss is evil and doesn't love him, similar to how Snow felt about Lucy at the end.

Also, when snow visits katniss in catching fire, when she says shes not indifferent towards peeta he gets triggered and screams "don't lie!" losing his composture. Lucy Gray's footprint was still there.

Another thing was the iconic bow. When Lucy Gray was reaped, she bowed at the end of her song satirically and passive aggressively, making eye contact with the camera and taking up large amounts of space. You see Katniss doing a very similar bow when she is ranked before the first games.

This explains so much about why snow hated katniss she brought back too many painful memories about him from his past.

In snows weird way katniss was like a breath of fresh air for him. Men like snow know a worthy enemy only comes around the corner a couple times in his lifetime and katniss was it. He reveled in the sporting challenge she gave him, he was so distracted by her that he didn’t realize coin was the real threat. People ask why “homelander didnt just kill butcher” or “Snow didnt just have katniss murdered” men like these long for a worthy challenge, someone with the balls to stand up to them. They respect it and are down to play the game. They could of ended it early but they’ve done that their entire lives, “lets see where this goes” until it snowballs so much it ends up crushing them. Snow was so in love with the idea of katnis challenging him he didnt see coin standing right behind her before it was to late.

She wrote the song about Arlos Chance who was hung for apparently exploding a mine, I believe. Before he died he told his wife, Lil, to run. “Run, Lil, run!” He said just before he met his doom. The rest of the song goes along with it. (Edit:) Which is where she told Snow to meet her.

I believe that the hanging tree isn’t about snow, and is actually about the hanging which happened in the book. In the hanging a girl runs out because she’s in love with the one being hung. Then the person being hung calls out “Run Lil! Run.” Which is carried out into the forest by the mocking and jabberjays.

After I finished reading Ballad when it came out, I remember thinking how it would be interesting to have snippets of the original trilogy from Snow’s perspective, given the connections Katniss and Lucy Gray had. I always thought how much of a slap in the face hearing Katniss sing the hanging tree must have been
