Alan Watts – THE WAYS OF THE EGO (Shots of Wisdom 13)

Is there a way to think or do anything without your ego being in control? Alan Watts answer to this question might be quite disturbing for most spiritual seekers, whose main goal is gaining the upper hand over their ego. However, the depth and clarity of Watts' view on this point are just too strong to be disputed. His debunking of the ego's ways behind the apparently egoless workings of the mind is strikingly deep and fascinating.

At the end when he said doing good for yourself or doing good for othersThere was a quote I heard... preserving peace is selfish because preserving peace is what causes war so preserving peace at all times within yourself and others will cause nothing but war This brings us back to flowing like water you really gotta go through life like water man

I was 33years old when I looked up and said “God if you are real help me” now 45 years old life hasn’t gotten any easier but something happened to me that am that no one can take away from me with all that said that was the first time I spoked out to him with a passion and faith at the same time

He led off many a lecture (or portion thereof) by telling his audience he was not there to improve them. In one I've heard he actually said something like: "if the same fuc$ed-up self that desperately needs improvement is the one directing the effort of improvement, then who can possibly be improved?" He had the whole room laughing. This is why he self-styled himself the "standup philosopher"!

I sometimes wonder how he would react to discover that a half century or so after he delivered his most popular lectures, they would make him a star on YouTube with tens of millions of views/listens all around the world. He'd probably be disgusted -- bemusedly disgusted, not seriously disgusted (only sincerely disgusted -- that distinction between sincerity and severity forms a cornerstone of his teaching and insight).

This video is good, but it misses the final conclusion. Speaker's final conclusion was not present.
