The Dangers of Legalism

I recently taught a class about the dangers of legalism to a "ladies' class". I thought I had it all covered and was ready for any argument. Many in the class have embraced legalism and have been historically steeped in it and even after the class they have refused to even acknowledge that it is a problem. I have actually been labeled a false teacher and very judgemental at this point. Several used an argument of not being a "stumbling block" to others was the reason they held these beliefs. I had no idea where to go with that. It is a thinly veiled excuse to hold to their false beliefs. I am torn between continuing to attend this class to attempt to correct all the false teachings or just brush the dust off my feet. I am definitely praying about all of this.

What you described is literally the church we recently left. And the Narcissist was the pastor. So glad we finally left. Thank you for all you do in sharing this message!! ❤️

I grew up pretty legalistic. My husband who was not raised in church was horrified when I told him that our Wednesday night teacher in middle school told us girls that if we EVER came to church with shorts or a skirt shorter than 2” above the knee she would get an altar cloth and wrap it around us.

Most of my best friends in life have been male. They are totally platonic, but the church kept saying there is no such thing. I had few women friends because they were so catty, gossipy and critical. No thanks.

I was called a womanizer because I just asked a girl out 5 times. Then she ran away from the church for college and didn't return except for a wedding once.

Oh my goodness so good I took notes! Praying for your daughter and wife and you! Our baby was in nicu only for a few days and it was tough, but God was good.
You touched a bit on the fear of hell. I would love a more specific episode on that because it really pricked something for me as I’ve always doubted my salvation and was trying to please the ifb lords. So much good stuff to chew on. I’m trying to leave our current church that is still ifb. My husband doesn’t see his church as having a lack of grace filled preaching. The part where you talked about lack of grace for sanctification is exactly what I’ve been saying is my #1 issue with the church.

Edit: thanks for putting up with my stuttering and stammering in this. My brain often gets ahead of my mouth especially without preparation- being up early, throwing together some notes, then having time for only one shot - apparently has its side effects.
