We went to the heart of the Catalonia region to speak with the man behind the independence movement.
The government of Spain considers him the most dangerous man in Europe.

Al Jazeera's John Hendren sat down with Catalonia President Carles Puigdemont and asked him why he favours secession.

If the Spanish government weren’t running scared, why not let the referendum take place? Terrorising voters is one way to ensure an independence vote for Catalonia. The Spanish government has just made a catastrophic error. The first duty of any government is to protect its citizens, not treat them like dogs.

How about asking him some critical questions? Ask him about starting a referendum when half the catalán parlament walked out in protest. Ask him about the majority of catalans that are perfectly happy with being Spanish and was made alienated in their own communities by separatist voting to tear a country apart. Ask him why he starts a revolution instead of making buses run on time and other every day stuff a local parlament should be doing. Ask him what countries he think would give up a large part of their land mass and economy like he thought he could do with Spain.
