Dear IELTS candidates,
I have created this video lesson to teach you how to write a formal letter for the IELTS General Training test.
I highly recommend using the following strategies:

1) Do not use any contractions in your formal letter. Instead, write all words in their full form:
• isn’t should be written instead of is not
• aren’t should be written instead of are not
• don’t should be written instead of do not

2) Use only formal words and phrases. Don’t use colloquial expressions.
• 'This situation annoys me/brasses me off' should be replaced by 'I am concerned about this situation'/'I am dissatisfied with your service'.
• 'Grab some stuff online' should be replaced by 'purchase an item on the internet'.

3) Divide your letter into the following paragraphs:
Introduction (the purpose of the letter – The purpose of my letter is)
Body paragraph 1 (point 1)
Body paragraph 2 (point 1)
Body paragraph 3 (point 1)
Closure (Yours respectfully/Yours sincerely, John Smith)
