Scabies is a highly contagious skin condition caused by a microscopic mite known as Sarcoptes scabiei. Causes of scabies is by skin to skin contact as well as sharing of items such as clothing, towels or beddings. Close living conditions, such as crowded households, nursing homes, or prisons, can facilitate the rapid spread of scabies.

Scabies Symptoms
The most common symptom of scabies is intense itching, particularly at night. This itching is a result of the allergic reaction to the mite's saliva, faeces, and eggs. Other symptoms include small, raised bumps on the skin, rashes, and blisters. They typically occur between fingers, wrists, elbows, armpits, buttocks, and genitals. In children, scabies may also affect the scalp, palms, and soles of the feet.

How to treat Scabies
You can treat scabies by using over the counter treatment called lyclear 5% dermal cream or Permethrin cream. Permethrin is an insecticide that paralyses and kills the mite as well as their eggs. You apply the cream to the whole body, go to sleep, leave overnight for 8 to 12 hours and wash off in the morning with water and soap. To get rid of scabies completely, you can repeat the treatment 14 days later.

If permethrin does not work, the next treatment option for scabies is Malathion 0.5% lotion but you have to leave on the skin for 24 hrs before washing off.
It is advisable to treat the whole household to prevent spread of scabies as well as getting re-infected again.

Scabies Prevention
You also need to wash your beddings, clothes, towels at high temperatures above 50c, and any items you cannot wash should be sealed in a plastic bag for at least 72hrs as the mites need the human body to survive and die after 36 to 72 hrs

If treatments for scabies have not worked or you have crusted scabies (Norwegian scabies, which is a more severe form of scabies), then you need to see a dermatologist who might treat with oral steroids or oral ivermectin. Oral ivermectin is taken as two doses 7 or 14 days apart and it is not licensed for use of scabies treatment in the UK.

If you suspect scabies or experience persistent itching and skin irritation, seeking medical attention is recommended for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Little did I know, but I had scabies on and off for 18 months. I saw a dermatologist and despite checking me all over with his magnifying glass he did not diagnose the condition. I had very few rashes or bumps, but had intensive itching (particularly at night), occasionally sensitive skin when in the sun and often had goosebumps and chills. Strangely enough, the only thing that provided temporary relief from the itching was a very hot bath!? In the end, I took 2x treatments of Permethrin, 2x treatments of Ivermectin, but the game changer seemed to be 2x treatments of Malathion. In addition all clothes were changed daily, bagged up for 3x days or washed at high temperatures. All bedding was changed every other day - believe me this felt like some sort of super variant that made my life hell, so don't underestimate it!

How effective is the second dose of ivermectin? The creams did not work. I went through three tubes. But I’m not infested no crusted scabies. But they are so hard to get rid of. We have been doing loads of laundry, constantly cleaning. Changing twice a day showering withSulphur lavender soap. Applying Teatree oil to new bites. Steam mopping every day. Treated the cats with revolution plus took them to the vet twice.
