Wow, I’m glad I found this video today. I’m 5 days post-op and this dude is totally my spirit animal. I too got caught up in all of the videos of people running marathons a week after surgery (not really, but…), and here I am still trying to find a way to sleep comfortably and manage the soreness & swelling. This video really sums up the experience for many of us in an honest & relatable way. Thanks!

The physical condition you are in before the surgery is paramount to your recovery, absolutely vital. I am 68 and I was a jogger and not overweight (5'9" 160 pounds). Guarantee when you hit 3 weeks you'll start to see improvement day to day. I had total right hip replacement and was home same day. Two days with walker, two days with cane and then on my own. Never had pain that wasn't manageable with Tylenol the oxycodiene made me sick. I'm NO superman but if you are overweight its going to slow things down greatly. Schedule your surgery two months out and start walking and try to lose some weight. It's critical.

5 years later, glad this came up in my feed. Almost makes me want to try and do a YouTube video.
This morning is 5 days post op for me. Had my left hip replaced in June 2013, a little over 11 years ago.
I don’t remember much of the rehab from back then, which is probably a good thing. I may have reconsidered it otherwise. Not a walk in the park and that’s with 100 faithful people praying for me.
Headed to my first local PT appointment in a few hours. Had PT last Friday at the surgeons office in Frisco, TX where they showed me a few things.
Been looking for a used massage table so I can do the exercises at home. Also need to buy a chair because we only have couches in the living room and they are all too low and my improvised method of stacking cushions is not the best plan.
Hope everyone else in week one is doing as well or better.
God bless you all and our country as the biggest day of our lives is likely going to happen tomorrow.
Praying for results within 24 hours of the polls shutting down.
USAF Veteran, Grandpa and husband to an amazing woman of God. Love my job working for a great defense contractor out of Houston.

I’m going through it now, right hip too. My front thigh and knee hurts. Can’t sleep. Can’t put my foot on the floor yet.

Thank you!!! It is good to hear a real person During recovery. I am nine days out, and I don’t feel like I am progressing that well. I still have a painful walk and I also prefer walking with the Walker rather than a cane. A couple of days ago I developed a little bit of drainage from my incision which scares me. I still have my stitches in, I mean, staples.I also have a painful calf and swelled ankle and foot. Anyway thanks for your testimony. I hope you got well quickly after that and thanks again.

Many prayers for you to have a very quick recovery Gary!! One thing for sure you do need to take it easy as instructed for how ever long it take. The last thing you want is to create further problems. Wayne

Hello Gary, my father is having his left hip replacement surgery on Friday and he lives alone. I’ll be flying home to look after him but only for 5 days. His house has steps everywhere, driveway to front door, garage into house, steps into the kitchen and a flight of stairs to his bedroom. I was going to keep him in my hotel for the first 2 days for a quiet environment and that is step/stairs free and then take him home and stay with him there and get him acclimated. I plan to have a hospital bed delivered to stay on the first floor for a week or so. I’m wondering if I should forego the hotel stay and take him directly home to avoid getting him in/out of a car a few times? Thoughts?
In terms of supplies, what do you recommend? I sent him a robe, Velcro pants, a leg lifter, a grabber to pick up things, some pillows, ice packs, toilet risers. Anything else in terms of personal care, clothing etc that would make life a little easier? Thanks!

Thanks so much. I’m 11 days after surgery and I still can’t bend my leg even 2 inches in order to do the sliding exercise lying down.. can’t stomach the medicine so I’m only on Tylenol .I feel the lymph is not draining as the amount of swelling has not changed .I am so exhausted most of the time that I don’t have much impetus to do the exercises but I’m doing them anyway.

Hi Gary, can you give an update on your replacement. How do you feel now? I'm 53 and scheduled for a replacement in September 2021, would love to hear your update. Thanks

thanks Gary for your REALISTIC accounting of things -in sharp contrast to so MANY vid's touting "miracle" recoveries in RECORD TIME... (bunch o' B.S.!!)

I just wanted you to know i just had my total hip replacement done finally. The Hydramorphine they have made my stomach so upset had night sweats and now I'm just icing my right hip and only Tylenol. They wanted me to go home the next day. Ya right. Tomorrow i hope to be going home it's my third day
Finally feeling a bit better. I have to be feather weight bearing on my hip for 6 weeks very hard. I lost my voice to due anesthesia and having the tube but getting better. Hopefully on road to recovery. I don't have bone on bone pain anymore so I'm happy about that. 🙏

I’m on day 3–my temp is 99, incision hurts a bit. The aspirin I take every day upsets my stomach. I have a nurse who comes everyday to change dressing and also a physical therapist. This isn’t a whole lot of fun.

Day 8 taking it slow, ice anytime I am resting and elevation, walk with walker, stiff sore but I guess manageable, the pain meds are worse then the surgery, so I am trying to go without the pain meds using alternative supplements, I think it’s sold as a quick fix, it’s not m, I learned it takes a year to heal completely.. so your doing well for week one, I’d stay with walker at least the first month

Daily prayers for your full recovery, including that rash. After all the talk of MRSA/MSSA bacteria in the prep time I worry. Be watchful.

I'm one week post surgery today. My foot is swollen and black and blue. Was even more swollen over the weekend, which got me concerned. Swelling seems less today. The leg is still a bit tender, but I am using a cane only when I'm outside and the walker only for shower transfer. I've been up and walking a mile each day (three shorter walks) and there is almost no pain. The only pain is like you said when raising the leg for bed transfer. Thanks for your honest testimony.

3 days after anterior..
Only taking acetaminophen. Haven't needed the narcotics.
Day 2 was the worst, but not too bad. Had a slight fever which is gone today. Some swelling.
Feel better today and slept better last night.
Sleep with my leg elevated on a pillow. Can now turn onto my side. A leg lifter strap helps alot the first day or two, but I can now get out of bed without it.
The exercises are important.
No problem walking unaided, but still using the walker for now, due to tightness and pain.
Knee is a little sore, but I understand this is normal.
I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
I wouldn't say recovery is easy, but the improvement is much better than the chronic osteoarthritis I had, which only gets worse.
