I met a man who was there. I was doing a canvassing job and knocked on his door. Somehow, the topic turned from street trees to Iwo Jima. He was a corpsman on a hospital ship. They got hit by a kamikaze, but he survived. So many years later, and it was just on his mind every day, I guess. One of the most brutal battles in history, I suppose a person who lives through an experience like that doesn't ever truly live in the present ever again. Nice fellow. I think about him when I drive by his house.

This man has to be nearly 100 years old or more. Looks great for his age. Physically, and mentally.

A good friend of mine was there (God rest his Soul).
He was badly wounded, but survived.
“Hell was a better place than Iwo Jima.”, he said.
