My only thought is that men like John Basilone are born to perform heroic deeds that most of us cannot begin to comprehend. God has blessed us with these men and may God bless John and all of our heroes.

I've read about Sergeant Basilone and his heroic service and from my father. The later was Air Force and in Korea. Even a different arm of the service a decade later knew of the sergeant. I remember hearing his name late 60s and 70s while attending various VFW and DAV functions. Always with deep reverence.

My father was a Marine at Guadalcanal, Tarawa. Saipan and Tinian. He was a combat engineer carrying a flamethrower and demolition charges. Silver Star and Purple Heart. He never spoke of the war. The medals were kept in a drawer. No one knew he was awarded these. When I found them and asked him why. He told me medals don’t matter. The only hero’s are the guys who don’t make it home.
These men should never be forgotten

My uncle wanted to go back to be with his “friends” to fight the Japanese in the Pacific after recuperating from a wound he saw in action after 2 months. He could have went home instead. He was KIA sometime after returning.

He was part of the 3Cs in the thirties and as the oldest of 10 children, I believe he wanted to return to combat more so then to return stateside to an overcrowded house and a bleak environment.

He is buried in Hawaii. Not too far from Ernie Pyle’s grave. Thank you and RIP Walter Kaczowski, John Basilone and all others that gave their life for this great nation of ours, the United States of America.

Wow! Thank you for this profile of this truly great warrior! A Marine's Marine. It is profoundly moving how at key points in his life Gunnery Sgt. Basilone listened to the leading of that still small voice and followed his path. It was like he was born with a mission and purpose he was destined to discover and fulfill. It was like he really came alive and found his calling when he entered the Military. A truly amazing man and American Marine. Thank you, Gunny! God bless you always.

That voice in his head wasn't random it was God telling him what his path should be. And that path saved hundreds of men. Marines never quit, that's why, even after they leave the corp, they don't say I WAS a Marine, they say I AM a Marine. This man is one of their finest examples. God Bless him for his ultimate sacrifice and following God's calling! Semper Fi!

John Basilone is more famous than Sinatra. To those who know what counts, he's the epitome of manhood. A zebra can't change his stripes!
