Turkey is reported to have carried out the first test of an S-400 air defense system purchased from Russia.
On October 16, photos and videos of the alleged test circulating on social media showed smoke rising into the sky. According to Turkish media reports last week, the S-400 air defense systems were being transported to Sinop which is located on the Black Sea coast. Turkish authorities closed the area from October 13-16, saying that the area "will carry out shooting exercises" in the area. The area has also been declared "dangerous" for shipping activities.
Earlier, a government official told Turkish Minute that 10 Banshee aerial target drones had been sent to Sinop for S-400 testing. Tests will be carried out to check the S-400's combat readiness, the radar's ability to detect and track targets, its communication system capabilities, and check the fire control system.
Missiles from Turkey's S-400 air defense system succeeded in destroying three air targets in the first test after Ankara purchased the air defense system from Russia in 2019.
The S-400 was tested from near the northern city of Sinop, a source in Turkish military and diplomatic circles told the TASS news agency.
Three S-400 anti-aircraft missile system missiles were launched. Everything succeeded in hitting the target set, said the source.
