I kinda disliked how dishonourable Obanai is being here, is this not the first time in 100 years that a upper moon has even been killed? Why does he play it off as such a small feat. Otherwise I loved this arc, every character in this series has a personality that is interesting. Can't wait to get to know more of the Upper moons and the Hashira more in depth.

I think he just retired because if he didn't, Shinobu would have his head at their next meaning. Not sure if retiring is enough to save himself though.
