Obanai backstory:

Obanai was born into a clan of thieves who worshipped a snake-like demon. The demon had a human-like upper body with yellow eyes, a wide mouth, and a long tongue, and a snake-like lower body.
Obanai's family sacrificed their own children to the demon in exchange for stolen goods from the people the demon killed.
As a boy, Obanai was kept in a cage as a pet for the demon because it liked his rare two-colored eyes. The demon would stalk around his cage at night, frightening Obanai so much that he couldn't sleep.
When Obanai turned 12, he was finally allowed out of his cage and came face to face with the demon. The demon wanted Obanai to look more like her and demanded that he slice his mouth from ear to ear. This is why Obanai covers his mouth today.
Obanai was eventually rescued by Rengoku's father, the current Flame Hashira, and during his imprisonment he befriended the snake that can be seen around his neck today.
