In this guitar lesson I'll show you how to tune your guitar to Open D Tuning, very cool tuning, used by slide players.

It's nearly all 100% free and card details are not needed to register. You have everything to gain, and nothing to lose! My theory course is the best on the web (and one of the very few paid parts of the site) and it's awesome - if your theory is lacking and you wanna fix it - that's the place to go! At my store, you'll find a huge range of super cool guitar themed t-shirts, all my (paper) books, merch and lots more 🙂 and we got proper fun backing tracks for you to jam along with too!

Thanks so much Justin. This was great. It's my first time using Open D tuning or any tuning at all. You make it SO easy! Definitely chose the right profession, lol.

Beware of your strings, if you start feeling its too much pressure or it starts making noises it will break. (I've busted a string before and that sucks :( )

Edit: been a while, but seeing that this comment often gets some replies, a helpful tip. If a string sounds like it's about to break or there's too much tension, stop. Even if you get it tuned, too much tension and it will break during play. As an alternative, tone down, not up (most "standard" guitars will be toned down, not up, to get this tuning). Hopefully this can save some strings and headaches. Ok bye.

This sounds like a nice altered tuning. I'm a sucker for a different tuning... it makes practicing guitar an outer body experience ... it definitely opens up the gates of the imagination.

It's safer to tune down than it is to tune up.

Thank you so much! I forgot how to do it, and most of the tutorials only showed the low E string. You should all of them. Thank you.

Personally I felt the instructions weren’t very clear and I snapped my high e string trying to figure it out :/ now time to look up videos on how to replace strings.

Thanks, Justin, for your many clear and helpful guides to a wide range of songs. I wonder if you have heard Chris Thompson's 1971 song "Where Is My Wild Rose", which I think uses D-tuning? I would be very interested to see how you can analyze his plucking on the first two verses (which repeat through the rest of the song). Anyway, thanks for your generous uploads!

Not sure why I found this particular Method a bit confusing? not sure what he meant by using the 12th fret? I guess I'm used to those other Videos that just tune Strings one by one. oh. & in order. Lol. duh.

Yeah really helpful I can't tell if this was a joke because of how fast you went through each string or you just wanted to troll beginners. Could you slow it down and explain what you are doing and actually show more than 2.5 seconds of how to tune each string.

I do a lot of open E tunes that I composed myself and I'm quite familiar with that tuning. However, I wanted to try the open D and wondered if you tune up to that or down. So, a very simple and direct showing of open D tuning. Really enjoy the haunting and emotional type melodies I get from open tuning.
Thanks for that!
P.S. Been playing acoustic, electric, and bass for decades now and still lovin' it!!

Break my fall, by the Cold stares, uses this tuning. It is no a very hard song to learn for beginners, you might want to do a tutorial on it Justin? It would be a great song to show to your students.

Very good and simply explained of all the YouTube "how to" tune open you moved clearly thru no unnecessary over your head music theory..all .I IV V all open IV=5th fret &
V chord = 7th fret and 10th & 12th for cool breaks. Then playy down on 5th string 4- 3 -2 frets = easy turn around😅

Justin- this may make you laugh...
Was just watching an intro / beginner's lesson on open g- the tutor did all the strings bar the f#, then goes "just strum it till its a D" so strums the whole 6 strings until he has the D!
Now I can transcribe quite a lot of stuff off records (or do lessons without looking at the chords etc) and have a reasonable ear, but fark me that is a bit tough for a beginner!
So thanks for the fret 4 till just what I was looking for.
