How to Tune a Guitar to Alternate Tunings - Guitar Lessons with Stuart!

Guys! I have some Amazon Affiliate links for you! These are products that I use All THE TIME! Like, literally every day.

And here are two relatively inexpensive guitars that I love and strongly recommend, especially for beginners. (I usually play a Marin D17m, but unfortunately that one is NOT relatively inexpensive…)

Thanks for watching and playing along with me! My name is Stuart Lehman-Brown, a teacher, music store owner, and musician in the San Francisco Bay Area. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in Boston, I set up shop performing and teaching here in the North Bay. 15 years and 50,000 lessons later I’m still going strong, and sooner or later I’m afraid I’m going to start posting videos of my dogs. It’s inevitable.

3:00 "if you are in GUITAR mode, it's not gonna work. You need to be in chromatic mode" literally the most important unintuitive pieces of information that is skipped over in so many other tuning videos. Saved me a minor headache just now, xD

There are only a few tunings that I know of that require tuning up any of the strings. There is open E: E, B, E, G#, B E. sawmill: D, G, D, G, C, D.
open A: E, A, C#, A, C#(or A), E.
But one of my favorite open tunings only raises one string while lowering others. That's open D5 tuning. D, A, D, A, A, D.

I actually took the idea to tune like that from the Appalachian dulcimer. I don't know how many other people use this tuning, but I have written multiple songs in it and find it really fun to play. Most of the melody is played on the first 2 strings.

I have a question. You've mentioned that when I go to an alternate tuning, I should tune the strings more than once so the guitar is tuned well. Should I stretch the strings each time I tune them as well?

unrelated to this video but prior to snapping my string i bought 11, 52 and 12, 53 gauge strings (my guitar didn't tell me the gauge of strings so went off guesses) and for some reason after restringing to the right tune (g) the string is still really loose and buzzes when playing? do you have any idea why? even when reducing slack or tightening it doesn't do anything because i cant tune to g without snapping. any help is appreciated thank you!
