This Core Concept video focuses on Martin Heidegger's lecture "What Is Metaphysics?" and examines his discussion about the nature and scope of metaphysical inquiry. Heidegger outlines two conditions for genuine metaphysical inquiry, and discusses how metaphysics is essential for human beings.

My videos are used by students, lifelong learners, other professors, and professionals to learn more about topics, texts, and thinkers in philosophy, religious studies, literature, social-political theory, critical thinking, and communications. These include college and university classes, British A-levels preparation, and Indian civil service (IAS) examination preparation

There's an aspect of philosophy that has always troubled me. When Heidegger says the questioner "has to ask the question in a certain way" my immediate reaction is: OK this has now not only become a question of metaphysics it has now become, at least in part, a question of language. There are lots of examples in philosophy where, to me at least, it seems like what we are really having are debates in semantics as much as we are having debates in philosophy!!! Obviously, we need language to express ideas, but at times it seems like language is almost getting in the way of itself. So I go back to the fact that we need language to express ideas, but then I read something else and I get that feeling we're talking semantics again. It's a vicious circle!!

Hi. Thanks for this video. Heidegger is one of my favorite philosophers. Could you make a video explaining Heidegger 's Letter on Humanism?

Heidegger makes Metaphysics quite sexy. "Metaphysics is inquiry beyond or over beings which aims to recover them as such and as a whole for our grasp". Is there more qualification to that statement in the text or has that made a concise and absolute assertion. Too early to treat as an axiom of belief without the other comparators and work in the field. Are the beings recovered for themselves in this process?

So Heidegger is basically reinstating one of the msot important insight of Schopenhauer on philosophivcal inquiry. that is htat every inquiry into the objective phenomena, to be properly philosophical and not delve into naive materialism needs to start from the subjective as experienced the essential nature of the objective phenomenon and abstract from that a self knowledge and intimations of the modus operandi that such forces might have. in other words, to connect it back to Heidegger it can be said that metaphysics has such relation to a physics as sucbject to object, the subject is fully constituted of objectification and it's circumstancs, however without it's idea the change and difference in intensity which it perceives and affects it would not be possible. I like to think that the subject does not exist, but remains at the level of being. It's a rather lacanian insight. Following form this, Heidegger can be seen and i do see him as an idealist.

This is quite novel learning Heidegger's conception of Metaphysics. I shall remind myself to hold myself out to the nothing, when confronted by master/slave percepts from others.
