Martin Heidegger, What Is Metaphysics | The Nothing and Nihilation | Philosophy Core Concepts

This Core Concept video focuses on Martin Heidegger's lecture "What Is Metaphysics?" and examines his exposition of what the Nothing does, i.e. nihilation. (This is a term that translates the German neologism "nichten"). Heidegger views nihilation as more original than negation.

My videos are used by students, lifelong learners, other professors, and professionals to learn more about topics, texts, and thinkers in philosophy, religious studies, literature, social-political theory, critical thinking, and communications. These include college and university classes, British A-levels preparation, and Indian civil service (IAS) examination preparation

I think Heidegger's idea that anxiety is the mood in which Being discloses itself to us can be flipped on its head. For Plato and Aristotle, wonder stands at the beginning of all philosophical reflection, leading one eventually to the transcendent source of Being. Wonder versus anxiety: it's at least something to think about. thanks for the video.

Excellent.
This is what should be taught in seminaries.

Every time I read this part of Heidegger I see him as talking about our preconscious conceptual ability, but can't know whether he is talking about "the nothing" as our first move from direct engagement to abstract conceptual engagement or our last, most abstract engagement with totality. I am guessing the former since we can get there from moods, but I still don't know how he fits the intellectual aspect of abstraction (the conscious type) into his analysis as his phenomenological interpretation always seems so passive.

Greg, could this be similar to the area of a potential state of being, perhaps similar mechanics. It just seems to me to resemble the area of potentiality which other scholars have touched on. In the 'I Ching' reality is presented as "manifold" where some action or inaction will insert one in a specific place in it. Just wondering A) does it make any sense, and B) do you have any thoughts on potentiality. Hang a left and your life goes one way, hang a right and your life goes another way, each different but how does the in between area of potential dictate the direction?

For about eight years now I've been sitting on this idea that wordplay is useful for discovering things like this, as around that time I discovered, that nothing exists.
To suggest, that there is a nothing of some sort.

Please forgive my ignorance but is 'anxiety' on Heidegger's account a human universal, or is this reserved to the contemplative life or something else?

Raoden Aybara ... Marcus Aurelius wrote on campaign and wasn't at all a philosopher, but had a privileged roman education. Concerning your thought, I rather prefer to lose myself inside the minds of giants than leaving my conciousness be guided by misfortuned who can't meditate this core concepts about life.

When you realize nothing is everything then you will know this is my universe now. I am nothing. I can throw everything into the wall.

Truth may be that I am the nothing that is everything. Nothing is what everything is. Everything is actually nothing. I want to know everything. If everything is known there is no truth concealed. Everything is disclosed. Good luck.
