You could also add a lighning rod to see if its thunder, but it wont happen right away

I remember building a daylight detector that also functioned as a rain detector before daylight sensors were in the game. The device itself had a footprint of 12x12 or something and relied on the light levels at which grass would grow and die.

This is super useful if you want to have a villager-less file (sometimes you get a little tired of making trading hubs) and want a fishing-based enchantment system. Thank you! until this I had just been putting a block of carpet over a ladder on a long tunnel into my base so I can visually see the rain to know when is best to fish, but this is a cool alternative.
