And almost none of this was in the "Napoleon" movie. Josephine had more screen time then the actual battles.

The East India Company was generating vast amounts or revenue but as of the 1980s Britian was still paying off debt from the Napoleonic Wars I believe.

The Scorched Earth strategy is an extremely old strategy, but people keep using it because it's very effective. That's the strategy Fabius used against Hannibal, as well as the one Vercingetorix used against Caesar. If you can't beat them directly, then slowly cripple them and harass them until they break. It's pretty brilliant.

Out of spite to AdRev; I’m just gonna watch these videos MORE

I think now’s the perfect time just to mention a delicious piece of cosmic irony: Ad-Rev is a lot like Napoleon in that both may ultimately be defeated simply because they don’t know when to stop.

Thanks for going through all that trouble for us.

Question: Was Napoleon the champion of the French Revolution, spreading equality wherever he went? Or did he betray it by making himself an absolute monarch and restricting certain liberties? Was he an aggressive and ambitious conqueror hellbent on bringing Europe to its knees? Or was he simply defending himself against an aggressive Europe hellbent on reducing his power?

Answer: Two or more things can be correct at the same time.

I love the call back to WW2 Oversimplified -“and that is when it happened: It. Got. Cold. *stupid* cold”, as the snow dumps on the soldiers

38:47 When Napoleon came back to Paris it scared the crap out of Austria and Prussia so badly they demanded a full breakdown of French territories into small countries after his second defeat

The fact that you have to do this because the pettiness/childness of a group is crazy. These people get a little bit of power and go crazy. And apparently they can’t admit when they are wrong.

31:00 - Murat tried to go to war with Austria to get control of northern Italy, and was defeated leading to the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy in Naples. He went to Paris and tried to appeal to Napoleon for help (this just so happened to be during the Hundred Days) but Napoleon refused to see him. Murat tried to lead an expedition to regain the throne anyway, but was captured and executed for treason.

32:42 That was a French/Canadian mini-series simply called Napoléon, which simultaneously filmed in French and English.
John Malkovich was probably chosen for the role of Talleyrand because he could speak French.
Napoléon portrayed by Christian Clavier who was famous in France for his comedic roles, I also remember Gérard Depardieu was in this tv show.

Hey Chris. Long time viewer, first time commenter. Just wanted to reach out to say that I hope you and your family are safe with all that is going on with the derailed train in NW Ohio! You’re in my thoughts, and thanks for all the awesome content!!

41:28 there’s a scale model of the Battle of Waterloo in the town where I’m from, Drogheda, Ireland. There was a local contingent fighting on the British side at Waterloo and the Duke of Wellington himself, despite being born in Dublin, actually went to school here. As much as we don’t want to, my town is embracing its English past a lot more.

One interesting bit of information is that Spanish monarchs are monarchs because they're sworn by the courts & each province has to be sworn in turn. So at that moment, their royal family was unpopular but it wasn't a matter of simply swapping kings. The next one didn't bother with the established costumes. Same costumes say that if the monarch is absent the power returns to the people until a new monarch is sworn. In the view of many Spaniards, the monarchs were absent, they were in prison, and Napoleon's brother wasn't sworn or recognised by anyone, so the throne was vacant. Therefore the power goes back to the people. Napoleon missed that cultural difference between monarchy in France and monarchy in Spain and it costed him dearly.

you raised a interesting point about Britain's finances so I had a little look and it appears it was mostly funded by the brand new (for the time) income tax and only about 25% from government debt

Absolutely love this channel. been watching for a year now. I really would love to recommend a great book by my favourite historian - Adam Zamoyski - "1812" ... which gives an incredible account of napoleons invasion of Russia. The campaign is brought to life by using diary and journal entries from soldiers involved and from survivors years later.
Big love to you and yours from a brit living in New Zealand (Aotearoa)

"Napoleon was getting old, his tactics were becoming less refined"
a few minutes later in the video:
"Sorry Napoleon, you're 43..."

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought the British by this point was not an absolute monarchy since parliament had a lot.of power and had ways of checking on the crown
