I hopped on around 2000. I have a pic with my then infant son in my lap as I read A Storm of Swords. He’s now 21 and a junior in college.

I worked at Waldenbooks part time for the employee discounts. We received a huge stack of the Game Of Thrones for the clearance tables. I had gotten bored with recent books was exasperated with Wheel of Time series and had just finished The Chronicles of Amber a compiled series by Zelensky. I read a few lines in the first chapter and was hooked. I have a first edition from that clearance stack and gave copies to friends to read they were hooked. Recommended them to customers and they came back for more. Anxiously waiting for the next book. I don’t have cable so I didn’t know it was going to be a series and everyone started talking about it. I told them I had been reading the series for years and they were baffled. The series has everything but nothing seems to be over the top so far. I just wish he would finish the damn series! 😫

I love the original Storm of Swords cover with the funeral of Hoster Tully. Looks like an Arthurian painting.

It's the best fantasy. There are plenty of great fantasy series but nothing has the depth and breadth of a song of ice and fire. The grity, dark realism is unmatched in the genre.

The world build up is very phenomenal is my favorite fantasy book

To be honest brandon sanderson takes the cake for me. That's just personal taste. In grim dark genre Joe Abercrombie absolutely killed it with the first law and now devils looks so promising

We’re never seeing those 2 books and an official ending to a song of ice and fire 😭

Almost exactly half of that 3 decades has been the wait between books 5 and 6, I believe it just passed the 14 year mark a couple weeks ago. I try to have hope and faith but man I really don’t know at this point, Grrm is in his mid 70s and I don’t if he’s got the stamina or attention span for it anymore

Asoiaf is by far my favorite fantasy series, the only real knock against it is that it’s just not done.

It has a perfect combination to me of feeling familiar as I’m a history nerd and the absurd amount of lore, houses and characters in the series and all the historical links you can make really appeals to me, while also being unfamiliar by having dragons and magic.

I think you would get great Youtube views if you did a “bedtime reading” style video. Like i know youre likely too busy to truly make this a thing but id happily fall asleep to a chapter or two of a novel

I have these editions. I bought them from a guy off facebook marketplace. They were definitely stolen from a library lol. Wish the were in that condition, however.

Game of thrones is easily one of if not my favorite fantasy series. To even compare other series to it seems hypocritical to the books. Though, if you count dune or the red rising books, they are close to it. Still, game of thrones remains probably my favorite books of all time - can’t wait until George eventually gets a new book out

The song of ice and fire series is amazing, but the wheel of time is one of my favorites, as well as the Belgariad and the Molorean by David and Lee Eddings. The storm light archive is also pretty good by Brandon Sanderson
