You can also do this on OBS Studio if you capture a media file and select the mkv you want to convert. just make sure obs is capturing in mp4, it takes longer but it actually works

I need to give my thanks to this video and it’s creator, because I needed to submit a video for a college class and the file was MKV. The website used works on mobile devices too, or at least IPhones.

Pause the image at 0:59. Notice the source file isn't even an MKV file but an M4V (aka. MP4) file (so technically almost the exact same as the destination file).
If you want to avoid unnecessary (and time wasting) video conversion, select the option "Dump raw input" in this screen instead. In most cases you can simply "switch containers" in a few seconds using this method.
*NOTE*: This method will only work if the video inside the MKV file are in H.264 (AVC) or H.265 (HEVC) format. You can check this by playing the video file normally in VLC, and then click on Tools > Codec settings... Check what it says under "codec" for the video.

MKV is a very situational format, while those with DTS-HD Master Audio and/or DTS:X sound will play just fine, it's those mixed in Dolby TrueHD and/or Dolby Atmos that are the problem for me. But if I convert them to M2TS or MP4, I don't get audio anymore, what should I do?

I tried to convert an 873MB 4K .mkv file to .mp4 with the Cloud converter, but about half way through the conversion it stopped and said the file was too large. I also tried to convert it with VLC, followed all the settings advised, but it creates a file with audio and no video. But thanks to Professor Moriarity's comment below I downloaded the AVC (Any Video Converter) program. AVC worked perfectly to convert my 873MB 7 min 53 sec 4K .MKV 25fps file to MP4.

The first one is tough and almost impossible on mac, but the second one really works

Or, for a way quicker method, just simply change the container.

One way is to use ffmpeg with a simple bat file:
ffmpeg -i [name of video].mkv -c:v copy -c:a copy output.mp4
