The truth about fat shaming: does fat shaming help weight loss? The harm of weight stigma.

While some may think that commenting on another person’s body may help motivate them to lose weight or become healthier, it’s actually the opposite. Not only does fat shaming fail at making people lose weight, but it can also have very harmful effects, and lead to even more weight gain.
Here’s what the science has to say on the dangers of fat shaming.
Fat shaming involves criticizing people on their weight, excess fat, or eating habits, causing them to feel ashamed and embarrassed about their bodies.
People with extra fat are constantly associated with stereotypes such as not having self-control or willpower, being lazy, and being slothful. It is commonly believed that they deserve less respect because they are the only ones to blame for their bodies. They are stigmatized and discriminated against, and the people who fat shame do so all while hiding behind the supposedly commendable “health card”.
In this video, I talk about the dangers of fat shaming, the science of fat shaming, and why fat shaming needs to stop. I give you tips on how to break the fat shaming cycle. Hopefully it will help you see the problem with fat shaming!
PS: this video is from the viewpoint of a nutrition professional, not from an overweight person who experiences fat shaming. I am NOT speaking from experience here so there are obviously a lot of aspects that I can't understand.

I decided to pursue a weight loss journey and this all came from within. I love hiking, diving, rock climbing, kayaking, biking etc. I love being outdoors and I want to be in the best physical shape to do these things. I want to be in the body that suits my personality. This took years of being overweight and being shamed for it. People saying, “you have such a beautiful face, such a waste that you’re overweight”. In turn those comments made me feel worse and kept me from getting to the place I wanted to be. I had multiple binging episodes and would starve, restrict, binge, repeat. My decision was a “click” moment for me. I’ve lost the weight slowly and steadily. With this journey and mentality I still believe everyone has the right to live in their bodies. If someone wants to change their bodies then I will be there to support as well :)

Exactly! A close friend of mine had problems with being overweight and binging, and her parents (especially her dad) were so cruel.. They compared her to her friends. My mom told them this wasn't okay.. She's going to therapy now and has lost weight <3

Great video! I love you channel!

All of the studies about the way fat shaming impacts actual fat gain, apart from the mental health issues I was already aware of from personal experience, are really insightful. Thank you so much for sharing and summarizing the topic in a bigger picture.

I was searching for some mental health video about fat shaming, but coming from a nutritionist I would say if feels even more validating of the pain that body shaming inflicts, sending a huge hug for that.

The only thing that I don't agree on is addressing the topic as a medical concern, once because the medical concern might often be a mask that still is meant (and consequently felt) as a sneaky way of shaming (my narcissistic mother uses this tactics, after years of body shaming she has switched to arbitrarly misdiagnose me - at every conversation, no matter the topic - with type 2 diabetes, and I have to point out that she's no doctor, apart from a slow metabolism I was born with I show no signs, and she did the same with my father so she could control what he eats, even years after divorce. Ironically, she's the one with type 2 diabetes); and second, because even medical concern can lead people to engage in similar behavior. When people tell me that I should stop smoking because I risk cancer, I crave a cigarette. When somebody who has cleanmess obsessions is told that washing themselves too frequently makes their hair get oily earlier, they become hyper-aware of the current oiliness. I got to the point in which I cinically answer "just let me die, then".

The same can be said for skinny shaming. That’s just as harmful too. Body shaming in general is terrible. I lost weight and felt great about myself but my brother said some really awful things to me about it and it really affected me too.

Leads to weight gain? Leads to undereating, fear of gaining or not losing enough weight. I am still encouraged to lose weight with BMI 21-22 with BMI about 23 I was treated like an elephant(all of my weights were normalweight!)

I’m in Texas and I actually see more skinny shaming, but people don’t even realize that they’re doing anything wrong.

I hear people make comments like, “When is the last time you ate?”, “Do you even eat?”, or “You’re nothing but skin and bones.”

Some how this isn’t seen as shaming or hurtful. It’s socially acceptable, but fat shaming is quickly called out so most people don’t do it.

I only recently stopped believing that my self worth was linked to my weight, and came around to the idea of losing weight for my health. Oh my god it's so much better, and I can't believe it took me so long to stop believing that, but now that I have I measure my progress differently - no scales, just waist measurements to see how much less fat is sitting around my vital organs, and heart rate recovery time to assess my fitness. Thanks for these videos, they're really helping me remold my relationship with food.

I've always been a skinny girl, thanks to good metabolism. Unfortunately, people don't understand this concept and i've been skinny-shamed my whole life. Now that I''m married, there are more people to comment on my size. Mostly, I am able to ignore them but sometimes it does affect me. It'd be great to see tips on how to deal with skinny shaming

I'm really fat and trying to lose weight. Though, I hadn't really been fat shamed, my mom has told me that gaining weight is unhealthy and can lead to health issues, which has happened to me before.

In western countries, you are enforced to treat people with respect whether you like it or not and always have to smile even though life is not treating you well. 😢😖

Is fat shaming prevalent in France?

I am Asian and it’s very common for family and family friends fat shame (disrespectfully) anyone who is younger. I was fat shamed as a child by my mom’s “friends” and I am an adult now and was fat shamed by my friend’s mom recently. It’s just plain bullying because how does some else’s weight matter to another person..?! 🤔 also, fat shamers who think they are trying to “help”.... who are these people who assumes that their opinions matter so much that I am all the sudden going to listen to them and lose weight because they said that I should..? People are strange /:

Great video as usual !! I went through your intermittent fasting blog and I have a small doubt: let's say someone is doing OMAD and the other person using calorie restriction. Apart from hormonal benefits of fasting, will there be any difference if both people are consuming the same calories? Like the OMAD person eating 2000 calories in a sitting vs the other person eating three meals a day which add upto 2000 calories?
I want to know if eating all your calories in one sitting vs spreading them apart is any different? I have come across many videos where they say timing doesn't matter as long as we are in a deficit/maintainance.
Also, if I am eating my maintenance calories in 1 meal vs calories spread out throughout the day, will I lose weight?
