The calories in, calories out model of health hasn’t been serving us. Not all calories are created equal; healthy fats can be much more nutritious than non-fat refined carbs. One of the biggest failings of that energy-balance approach to eating is that it doesn’t take hormones into account—and hormones have a massive impact on our weight and our health. ⁣

This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I was joined by Gary Taubes to talk about the problem with viewing weight loss as a math problem and why keto is a good example of stepping away from that pattern. ⁣

The fact that obesity was a rare occurrence before the 1950s and now it is more common for a person to be overweight than normal weight demonstrates that something in our environment has changed. The alternative hypothesis that humanity just, all of a sudden, lost our collective will power and discipline is intellectually lazy. While some individual's who are obese are indeed obese because of gluttony and a lack of willpower, because they use food as means for escapism, gluttony and sloth does not explain this problem on a population level.

Thank you SO much for this discussion. I swear there was nothing I tried harder at than to go from fat to thin. The idea that it must be all my (or any overweight person's) fault is an outdated and terrible paradigm that needs a long overdue update

Isn’t it about all those things? Intake, time between meals (fasting), and content of intake- let’s not go the extreme opposite direction on this. Your weight is totally in your hands as long as your armed with the right knowledge. The title of this video is misleading.

I once gained weight when I ate too much and didn’t exercise. And when I stopped eating too much and exercised, i lost the weight. 🤦🏻‍♂️
