I had a dr appointment last week she said “ you need to take care of yourself “ I wasn’t mad, I didn’t feel ashamed because she was right

Let's face it, extra weight is not healthy. A doctor who has no bedside manner is hard to take, but I personally was grateful when my doc told me he was afraid of losing me. I started taking things seriously and lost over 150lbs. Sugar coating symptoms and risks is just not helpful.

Not everything can be fixed with losing weight, but that should be the first thing to try. It is way better than trying medications and can be better for your overall health and wellness long term.

Alex, I love you, I’ve been subscribed for a long time but doctors spend a long time studying and doing. Weight does factor in many things. It’s doesn’t mean you’re not beautiful but being at a healthy weight eliminates problems caused from being over weight, which is why it might be a different case with a slimmer person, and other factors would be discussed. Your doctor isn’t meant to be your friend but to keep you healthy. Plus this is not be true for all but I feel like there’s a lot of doctors who aren’t socially with it and could learn how to perhaps phrase things truthfully but in a diplomatic way.

My doctors bring up my weight if it’s relevant but never shames me. I think that’s ok because I know my weight is affecting some aspects of my life. I do think it depends on how it is brought up.

Part of what doctors do is try to find safer alternatives to medications or other drastic treatments. Many times weight loss does affect the body and mind positively so it doesn’t surprise me that they would suggest that treatment to someone first.

i’m not gonna lie... i kinda wish my doctors growing up informed me on my weight and gave me good tips. not once have my doctors mentioned that i needed to lose weight (which i did, and still do). now being older i’m realizing how important it is to be healthy and how hard it is and how stuck in my old ways and patterns i am. still trying everyday to be a better person when it comes to health!!

btw i noticed you been paying attention to exercise more and it is so inspiring for me. i been watching you for years. you keep growing and are so beautiful. thank you for inspiring me, always!!! also i love the podcast so much pls never stop!!

The weight issue is so difficult when it comes to doctors. I’ve been bigger my entire life, but I gained a lot of weight in the last two years (I’m slowly losing it now). Every time I’d go to the doctor for anything I’d be told to lose weight. I’d follow all their instructions and work out 6-7 days a week but I kept gaining. Turns out, I have a medical condition that caused a lot of my symptoms and made it impossible to lose weight. It took years to figure this out bc the doctors would just be like “lose weight lose weight lose weight”. Since the new year I’ve started treatment and I’m down 20lbs. It’s a shame the doctors didn’t listen to me sooner.

I had a nurse say " if you lost weight you'd be so pretty". I broke out laughing.

The reality is, it's true what doctor's tell patients about losing weight. What would be helpful is it more doctor's learn how to be more sensitive towards patients feelings and learn better communication. I've been a woman of size my entire life and was scared of doctors, avoided them - until I started working for them. Be strong and honest, tell the doctor's that you are not there to talk about weight. Be assertive. You are employing them for YOUR health! and I do agree, younger doctor's are much better at understanding.

So you started to say a friend asked their Dr how they would treat their problem if they were skinny. What was the Dr’s response?

I broke my ankle when i was 15, the doctor walked into the ER, didn't even say hello or introduce himself, grabbed my thigh and said "too much". doctors are so inconsiderate and i literally get panic attacks about going now that im an adult. so happy you are talking about this!

My doctor when I was little would be rude on how she would tell me but honestly it did end up helping me in the long run cause I take my health serious now but at the time it made me feel sad, she recommended nutritionist/dietitians, I went and became more aware of my own health now tht I’m older & in a way I’m kind of glad she was that way cause I would probably be unaware.

So I have PCOS and I see an endocrinologist and she had mentioned weight loss in the beginning and how obesity affects PCOS but she didn’t make it a main “initiative” to heal my symptoms. She just mentioned it slightly so I wasn’t super offended. I think she did it professionally. But now I’ve spent this last 2 years working to lose weight and I’ve lost 60 pounds, but my symptoms have not changed much . So I completely agree with you, not everything is healed with weight loss.

I was diagnosed with PCOS as a young teen after getting painful irregular periods and started gaining weight. I was sent to a specialist (Yeah right back then there really wasn’t many ) by my GP and one day a few months in my regular doctor wasn't there (who never made me feel bad about the challenges I would face ) so I was sent to a younger female doctor, I can still remember how disgustingly rude she was to me, I was only 15 at the time and she made me feel like a piece of Sh*t, I came out of my appointment feeling so low and discouraged and now over 10 years later I really wished I would of had the courage to stand up for myself and walk out of that appointment. I really did learn that day that doctors don't always know whats best for you and are not perfect so its good to do your own research and look around for one you mess well with.

I was born with a condition called metatarsus adductus, and the deformity caused my legs to be severely misaligned. They assured my parents that it was no big deal and would sort itself out, but it was so bad that I really couldn't even run and play with other kids. I carried more weight than most kids as a result. My mom took me to an orthopedic specialist and they refused to do anything because of my weight, then said that the problem would work itself out as I got older. I endured numerous leg injuries throughout my life because it was never corrected, the most recent being a full ACL tear. The specialist I went to was so frustrated by the fact that they never tried to correct the problem and actually advised me against having the ACL repair because it would do little for improving the state of my legs. I ended up getting fitted for custom leg braces and I'm doing a lot better now! But basically, all of this stems from a doctor who refused to take a preexisting medical condition seriously because I was a chubby kid.
