Jordan Peterson’s Nonsense Views on Gay Conversion Therapy

Jordan Peterson contradicts himself on gay conversion therapy. Here’s why.

Jordan Peterson is a clinical psychologist who knows from his training that being LGBTQ is not a pathology or disease, and that conversion therapy doesn’t work. Still, he speaks against Bill C-4 which bans conversion therapy in Canada, claiming it mandates “affirmation therapy.” Just like when he spoke against Bill C-16, Peterson misunderstands the bill he is criticizing.

This time, though, Ben Shapiro, Matt Walsh, the Daily Wire, and The Heritage Foundation likely have something to do with that.

I dont get Peterson's perspective at all. If we're not supposed to compel people to believe think or act in a certain way then why should LGBTQ people be compelled to act in a way that forces us to not be LGBTQ? Why defend that at all? It just seems hypocritical given his previous stances as a "champion of free speech" whatever the hell that means.

Peterson invented word salad. His sentences are long, complex, and change direction usually midway through anything he's pretending to say. If you can nail him down to a single thought or point you are a better listener than I ever was.

Conversion therapy is built on the idea of _conversion, _ in case that wasn't obvious. Many protestants view homosexual *_attractions_* (not merely actions) as a sign of an unconverted state. What this means is that conversion therapy oftentimes operates by subtly telling clients that if they aren't yet straight then they haven't yet given their lives to Christ, in other words that they're _damned._

It's one thing to advise someone to practice a lifetime of abstinence. This tends to be the expectation Catholicism puts on gay people. That's not easy, but at least it's achievable. Telling them or insinuating that they need to _change their sexual orientation_ or else face the worst imaginable fate is a whole nother level of psychological torture!

If someone comes to a therapist saying, "I think I'm gay, but I'm worried that it's because of x reason", and the therapist works with them to find out if that's true, that isn't conversion therapy. Conversion therapy is when you take someone who is gay and try to convince them that they're not. If your motivation is to find the truth about your client's identity. regardless of what that truth is, then it isn't conversion and you won't be prosecuted. Peterson has to know this. He'd have to be practically brain dead not to know this. He just likes being a contrarian because he needs to keep on the opposite side of modern ideas at all times to keep his target audience nodding along to his bullshit intellectualism.
