I'm glad Europe protected the historic buildings. Children for generations can learn about them.

The longest known inhabited European style city in America is St Augustine which was founded by ponce de Leon. It’s still around and the center point is the old Spanish fort which was made from local coral stone that withstood cannon fire. Not a great fortification now but it’s history is still alive.

Swimming pools are nice, but their upkeep is expensive. (Money Pit)

3 words for ya'll. Solar heated pool. Even the San Francisco Bay Area which is cool weather wise, a solar heated pool could make the pool usable 6 months of the year or more.

One key reason for our interstate system design in the U.S.: It was developed by the Department of Defense (Orwellian Newspeak there) as transit systems for expediting military troop/equipment movement and evacuation corridors for civilians (VERY effective also in hurricane-prone areas). It's a blessing that they have not been necessary for inland war, but it was a practical idea anyway and has the added benefit of travel convenience for everyone here. I get the "splitting communities" thing, but quick access to multi-lane travel is an equity, especially in disaster situations.

I enjoy your channel. Thanks!

If you look at the picture where there were pools in the suburbs... there's only around 11 pools out of 150 house's.

Chicago's metro area is almost 11, 000 sq miles, the size of some small countries. I was surprised Paris population is so dense.

We redesigned our cities back the 1800s!! A small fire could an often take out huge parts of a city! An some Cities got wiped out! I grew up in a town with only 150 people! But in the past it was the largest city around! It never recovered.

By the 1970s, most U.S. cities were in terrible condition because of 'white flight' to the suburbs, declining businesses in the city center, and the resulting loss of tax revenues to maintain good city services. From Portland OR to NYC, city center areas were seedy and run down, crime and drug-ridden. The new 'freeways' that carved their way through the urban landscapes created isolated neighborhoods without basic amenities like grocery stores (called 'food deserts'). But it was then, from the mid-1970s on, that most cities began revitalization and urban renewal policies. Young people began moving back into inner cities as 'urban pioneers'. As gas for cars became more expensive and housing in the suburbs began increasing in price, many working class and professionals began moving back into the city centers to take advantage of low-cost housing in wonderful hold homes and buildings.

I moved from the suburbs into inner city Seattle in the early 1970s and when I was looking to buy a house, there were literally mansions on North Capitol Hill selling for $60K. Big, beautiful old homes built from the turn of the century to the 1950s. I still couldn't afford that, but was able to buy a nice middle-class home in the Wallingford District for $15K. 20 years later that house was worth $500K. Housing prices sky rocketed as more and more people moved back into the city. Capitol Hill, once drug-infested, its main thoroughfare, Broadway, empty and boarded up, came back to life with shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and clubs. That scenario repeated all across the country in most US cities and by the 1990s much of the urban blight of the 1960s-70s had disappeared. Certain cities like Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo still struggled and it has taken them longer to come back to life, but they too are improving.

Freedom lets you just be different, individual and being your own person to live however and still being civil and cordial to each person.

I saw someone else react to this and his numbers for Paris vs NYC are misleading

NYC population is 8.6mil over 300sq miles.
Paris is 2.1 over 40sq miles

Which comes out to the mentioned 28000 vs 50. But that is just the city center not the whole urban area or suburbs and surrounding area.

A better comparison is to Manhattan which has a population density of 72k per square mile.

Manhattan 72k
"Paris" 50k
NYC 28k
Paris urban 10k
NYC metro 4.7k
Paris metro 2k

That claim of only 10 million indigenous individuals is not accurate. It was anywhere from 60 to over 100 million pre-1492.

Only experienced Athens ... in Europe. The tiny old streets are great for walking and the mass transit is good. I don't like large cities in general. In the US in a smaller city we simply assume you need your own car. Our walking areas are the city parks. Many smaller cities in GB look wonderful to visit in good weather.

New York is about the least typical American city possible.
