the (adding of all coefficients) and (adding of alternate coefficients and then comparing) are basically just testing 1 & -1 as possible roots. i think it is better to explain it as that rather than doing it as if it is a 'trick' to discover roots, which some learners may just memorize the 'trick' without understanding.
