I'm waiting for the fifth wave, that will include stable superdense matter (like 0-3 orders of magnitude lighter than neutronium) which can have many useful properties, like near-perfect rigidness or being harnessable for highly efficient mass-to-energy conversion rate, allowing to store (and use) giant amount of energy in a very small space, to power nanobots, nano-3D-printers (including biological and molecular 3D printers) and other things!

The first wave goes back to well before Archimedes. It includes levers, pulleys, oars, catapults and all sorts of mechanical devices. These were often in the form of weapons developed as a result of war. The steam age added more power and oil increased it further as did nuclear power. But machines came first.
