This isn’t the original USS Kidd, it is the third iteration. The original USS Kidd was a fletcher class destroyer that served from 1943-1964. The original USS Kidd was notorious for rescuing downed pilots and holding them ransom until the carrier that the pilot was assigned to gave the Kidd’s crew ice cream as ransom. But the real reason that any destroyer named the Kidd gets to fly the Jolly Rodger is because the crew of the original Kidd adopted famous pirate William Kidd as their mascot.

Since he didn't say why...

At the Naval Academy, Admiral Kidd was nicknamed "Cap, " after the 17th century pirate Captain Kidd. After Admiral Kidd died, three destroyers have been named after him, the first in 1943. That first crew adopted the jolly roger because of his nickname. Kidd's widow asked the navy to give them formal permission to fly the jolly roger and they did. The other two USS Kidds have followed tradition.

Admiral Kidd's widow, Inez Kidd, requested that the Navy allow the ship to fly the Jolly Roger in his honor.

My son served on the Kidd straight out of basic training! Gave me the cap he wore when he crossed the international date line for the first time. Best part he said was when they were stationed in the Caribbean for a short time. CO announced they were now officially Pirates of the Caribbean!

Another fact about the USS Kidd, she carries a piece of the original USS Arizona. USS Kidd is informally deemed Arizona's (the state) ship.

All American navy ships fly the Jolly Roger as they cross the equator for the ShellBacks and Polywogs.

I've been on this ship! It's been docked in Baton Rouge for a while, but I think she needs repairs. Our tour guide 17 years ago, or so, actually served on 'er. The only thing that would make me happier is to be on a recreation of like a 17th, 18th century ship.
