Navy Vice Admiral Lisa M Franchetti is the commander of the U.S. 6th Fleet. She's the only female fleet commander in the U.S. Navy and not long ago, she would've been forbidden from even serving on this ship. Charlie D'Agata traveled to the USS Mount Whitney in the Mediterranean Sea to meet Franchetti and find out how she got into the role.

Shes now a full admiral and Chief of Naval operations and a member of the joint Chiefs of Staff. She is the first woman to be chief of naval operations, and the first woman to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

As a serving officer in the fleet, I have never heard a disparaging or negative word about ADM Franchetti and I am waaay down on the totem pole. Everyone seems to have faith in her. I hope she is able to navigate the DC world and make the Navy the best it can be. I am aware that she was not Lloyd Austins first pick for CNO but I still think Pagano as INDOPACOM and Franchetti as CNO is the right combination for the future.

I recently left Naples, Italy after spending 3.5 years serving there, I was proud to be one ADM Franchetti’s pilot for years, everything said here is true. She was one of my favorite ADM to fly, she is an awesome lady. Her husband and daughter are awesome people awesome.

Bless your heart Admiral. I served with you on the USS SHENANDOAH many years ago. You were a good AUXO. Plus made a mean pot of tofu chili. IC Chief Patterson.

@4:15 says it all and the problem that will always be. It does matter what our enemies think of us. It does matter what your subordinates think of you.

She looks like she could be a tough little fighter. But, does she own up to
Chester W. Nimitz who said: "Nope, that's not the main body of the Japanese Fleet.
Go look elsewhere!" They did, and they won the Battle of Midway.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this story! I have 2 daughters serving in the Navy. One has been in for 8 yrs and the recently graduated high school, left behind academic scholarships for college and enlisted. Definitely wasn't my choice for either of them but my oldest daughter taught me a lot and is a fabulous role model for her little sister. Both of them are at important turning points in their Naval Careers so this story couldn't have come at a more opportune time.

The Navy really needs to learn many lessons about retention policies. They give it lip service right now but it is not put into practice. They still have "their's another one to fill your boots" mentality and it's about numbers and paperwork.

None of these commanders don't come close to commanders like Nimitz, Halsey, and others of world war II. These appointments are what you might call feel good appointments, and I wonder they can stand up to pressures of combats.

Sorry, but wanting to see someone like you in a leadership position is not a reason to make that happen. They should get there on merit. If she did, good. If not, I would feel insulted in her position.

Vice Admiral Lisa M Franchetti reminds me of those 'non-Gung ho' type folks who casually join the military and climb up to the very top while enjoying the job without taking tension over career advancement.

Charlie D'Agata describing himself as "a multi-award winning correspondent" -- most people don't have to tell you what they have accomplished -- apparently his ego is quite inflated -- and frankly, offensive.

When I heard that President Biden nominated Admiral Franchetti for the next Chief of Naval Operations I was very excited and 110% supportive! Everything from the Admiral's 38+ years of service, to the many various commands she's held, to the awards that adorn her uniform give me high confidence she'd do a phenomenal job as the next CNO. In addition Franchetti is very much a people person who cares so much about the personnel under her command!
